Aston Manor School
Aston Manor Academy (formerly Aston Manor School) is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in the Aston area of Birmingham, England. Due in part to the fact that it is situated in Aston, it has children from a wide variety of ethnic groups. As of February 2013 the highest proportion of children at the school are of Bangladeshi origin at 33%, with Pakistani at 18%, Black Somali at 13%, Black Caribbean at 11%, Black African at 6% and White British at 3%. A very high proportion do not speak English as their first language. Reflecting the cultural diversity within the school, the school has its own steel band. In addition to having Technology College status, the Academy has gained a range of awards and accreditations, including Applied Learning, School Achievement, Healthy Schools and International School awards. Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. Academies are self-governing non-profit charitable trusts and may receive additional support from personal or corporate sponsors, either financially or in kind. Ateeq Javid
Ateeq Javid (born 15 October 1991) is a former English cricketer. He started his cricket career at Aston Manor CC where he was picked up for Warwickshire. He played club cricket for West Bromwich Dartmouth in the Birmingham Premier League when he moved on from Aston Manor. He is a right-handed batsman and a right arm off spin bowler. He made his debut for the county in June 2009 against Durham UCCE. Ateeq went to Aston Manor Academy along with professional footballer Saido Berahino, cricketer Recordo Gordon and MMA fighter Leon Edwards. In September 2017, it was announced that Javid would leave Warwickshire at the end of the season to join Leicestershire on a two-year contract ahead of the 2018 season. Recordo Olton Gordon (born 12 October 1991) is a Jamaican–born English cricketer. Gordon is a right-handed batsman who bowls right-arm fast-medium. He was born at St. Elizabeth's, Jamaica. Gordon played minor counties cricket for Herefordshire in 2011, making a single appearance for the county in the MCCA Knockout Trophy against Bedfordshire. Signed by Warwickshire in that same season, he made impressive performances for the county second XI in that season, before suffering a stress fracture of his back following a pre–season tour to Barbados in early 2012, missing the entire season. Leon Aaron Edwards (born 25 August 1991) is an English professional mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Welterweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is the current UFC Welterweight Champion. Rekeem Jordan Harper (born 8 March 2000) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Burton Albion. A product of West Bromwich Albion's academy, Harper made his first appearance for the club in August 2017 and later spent time on loan at Blackburn Rovers in 2017 and at Birmingham City in 2021. Saido Berahino (born 4 August 1993) is a Burundian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Cypriot First Division club AEL Limassol and captains the Burundi national team. Having fled his native Burundi as a child, he received political asylum in Birmingham and credits football with helping him integrate into English society. Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, England. Located immediately to the north-east of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. It is approximately 1.5 miles from Birmingham City Centre.
