Billy Askew (born 2 October 1959 in Great Lumley (near Durham), England) is an English footballer best known for his career with Hull City. Askew attended Lord Lawson school in Birtley and began his career with Middlesbrough before joining Hull in 1982. A left-footed midfield dynamo, he was an integral part of the side's rise from the Fourth to Second Division in the 80s before leaving for Newcastle United in 1990. After a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town, he moved to Gateshead. In 1994, he moved to Waterford United where he made 3 appearances. After retiring from playing he was a publican in Hull. Rilla Askew (born 1951) is an American novelist and short story writer who was born in Poteau, in the Sans Bois Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma, and grew up in the town of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Early life and education Askew graduated from the University of Tulsa with a B.F.A. in Theatre Performance in 1980. She moved then to New York where she studied acting at HB Studio with Herbert Bergoff in New York and later Curt Dempster at Ensemble Studio Theatre. She began writing—plays first, then fiction—with her theatre background supporting the use of language and rhythm in her works. She went on to study creative writing at Brooklyn College, where she received her MFA in 1989.
