Ashious Melu
Ashious Jordan Melu (6 June 1957 – 20 January 1997), also known as Ashios (or Ashols Melu), was a Zambian footballer and coach. Melu captained the Zambia national team from 1988 to 1992. Playing career Melu was born in Chililabombwe on June 6, 1957, and attended ''Chililabombwe Secondary School.'' He began playing for the Konkola Blades before moving to Mufulira Wanderers in the late 1970s. Melu played as a striker and was the top goal scorer in the Zambian league in 1983, scoring 43 goals, and winning the ''Zambian Footballer of the Year'' award. Alongside Efford Chabala, Kalusha Bwalya, Frederick Kashimoto, Evans Katebe and the Philemon brothers ( Philemon Mulala and Philemon Kaunda), and later Charles Musonda, Johnson Bwalya and Gibby Mbasela, Melu was part of Wanderers team, which was successful in cup competitions in the 1980s, though they never won the league championship. Chililabombwe
Chililabombwe (formerly named Bancroft) is a small town in Copperbelt Province, Zambia. It is located near the Democratic Republic of the Congo border. The name Chililabombwe means 'place of the croaking frog' in the local language of Lamba. The town has a population of 87 000 based on census data from 2010, making it one of the largest towns in the Copperbelt. The town is on the T3 road, 26 km north of the neighbouring town of Chingola, and approximately 10 km south of the large border market of Kasumbalesa. Philemon Kaunda
Philemon Kaunda was a Zambian footballer who featured for Mufulira Wanderers in the early '80s and also played for Zambia as a central defender. His younger brother Philemon Mulala also played for both Wanderers and Zambia in the same period. Kaunda first played for Wanderers when he was still a school boy at Kantanshi Secondary School in 1977 and made his international debut the following year when he came on as 90th-minute substitute in a CECAFA Cup group stage match against Somalia which Zambia won 4-0, with coach Brian Tiler stating that he had a great future with the national team. When Ackim Musenge was forced into retirement by injury at CECAFA 1979, Kaunda took over as Wanderers' key defender. In his time at Shinde Stadium, he won the league, the Challenge Cup and the Champion of Champions trophy. Fighton Simukonda
Fighton Simukonda (2 February 1958 – 15 February 2016) was a Zambian coach and former footballer. A defender, was part of the Nkana Red Devils side of the 1980s, winning five league titles, and he also captained Zambia. As a coach, he won several Zambian Premier League titles and became the first coach to lead a Zambian club to the group phase of the CAF Champions' League. Club career Simukonda was born in Chingola where he started his football career with Division II side Mimbula Diggers as a defender. He later moved to Diggers' town mates KB Davies FC, another Division II team. The Zambia Super League, known as the MTN Super League for sponsorship purposes, is the top association football league created in 1962 by the Football Association of Zambia. The winners of the league each season receives ZMW500,000 ($26,414.20) and a copper trophy engraved with their team name. Format The league is contested by 18 teams every season. Until 2018, it was scheduled to run within the calendar year from March to December.
