Arvi Siig
Arvi Siig (8 November 1938 – 23 November 1999) was an Estonians, Estonian poet, translator and journalist. He was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, CPSU and a communist, but still critical of many aspects of the political aspects of his day. His poetry inspired later Punk subculture, punk poets and many of his texts are used as lyrics by the Estonian alternative rock band Vennaskond. He was among the first to include modern urban themes in Estonian poetry, also giving a voice to Prostitution, prostitutes, including Soviet prostitutes. The creators of the award-winning computer RPG ''Disco Elysium,'' Robert Kurvitz and Aleksander Rostov hailed Siig as inspiration and the greatest Estonian poet when accepting the president's Young Cultural Figure award in 2020: "Without his modernism, Elysium - the world the game is placed in - would not be half of what it is." Estonians
Estonians or Estonian people ( et, eestlased) are a Finnic ethnic group native to Estonia who speak the Estonian language. The Estonian language is spoken as the first language by the vast majority of Estonians; it is closely related to other Finnic languages, e.g. Finnish, Karelian and Livonian. The Finnic languages are a subgroup of the larger Uralic family of languages, which also includes, e.g., the Sami languages. These languages are markedly different from most other native languages spoken in Europe, most of which have been assigned to Indo-European family of languages. Punk Subculture
The punk subculture includes a diverse and widely known array of ideologies, fashion, and other forms of expression, visual art, dance, literature, and film. Largely characterised by anti-establishment views, the promotion of individual freedom, and the DIY ethics, the culture originated from punk rock. The punk ethos is primarily made up of beliefs such as non-conformity, anti-authoritarianism, anti-corporatism, a do-it-yourself ethic, anti-consumerist, anti-corporate greed, direct action, and not "selling out". Vennaskond
Vennaskond ( Estonian for ''Brotherhood'') is an Estonian punk rock band founded in 1984. The band has toured in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Romania, Sweden, Germany, France, India, Poland and the United States (including CBGB). To show respect to the band, Metallica covered Vennaskond's hit song Insener Garini hüperboloid (Engineer Garin's Hyperboloid) in Estonia in front of a 60 000 strong crowd during their gig in Tartu, Estonia on 18 July 2019. The band is explicitly anarchist, with many lyrics referring to historical anarchists. The frontman of the band, Tõnu Trubetsky, has been called "Estonia's leading anarchist". Disco Elysium
''Disco Elysium'' is a 2019 role-playing video game developed and published by ZA/UM. Inspired by Infinity Engine–era games, particularly ''Planescape: Torment'', the game was written and designed by Estonians, Estonian novelist Robert Kurvitz and features a distinctive oil painting art style with music by the English band Sea Power. ''Disco Elysium'' takes place in the seaside district of a fictional city still recovering from the ramifications of a siege decades prior to the game's start. Robert Kurvitz
Robert Kurvitz (born 8 October 1984) is an Estonian novelist, video game designer, and musician. He was the lead designer of the 2019 video game Disco Elysium as a founding member of the ZA/UM cultural association and the eponymous video game development company that grew out of it. Kurvitz left the company in 2022. Profile Video games In 2016, Kurvitz founded the video game development company ZA/UM. ZA/UM's first game, a single-player computer roleplaying game titled ''Disco Elysium'', was released on 15 October 2019.
