Artie P. Hatzes
Artie P. Hatzes (born May 24, 1957) is an American astronomer. He is a professor at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena and director of the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory (Thuringian State Observatory). Hatzes is a pioneer in the search of extrasolar planets and is working on the COROT space mission. His achievements have included discovering the extrasolar planets Pollux b, Epsilon Eridani b and HD 13189 HD 13189 is an 8th magnitude star in Triangulum constellation. Pollux b, also designated β Geminorum b ( Latinized to beta Geminorum b, abbreviated, β Gem b) and HD 62509 b, formally named Thestias , is an extrasolar planet approximately 34 light-years away in the constellation of Gemini (the Twins). This planet was discovered orbiting the star Pollux in 2006 by astronomer Artie P. Hatzes, confirming his hypothesis originally published in 1993. The planet has at least twice the mass of Jupiter. It moves around Pollux in 1.61 years at a distance of in a nearly circular orbit. In July 2014 the International Astronomical Union launched NameExoWorlds, a process for giving proper names to certain exoplanets and their host stars. HD 13189 is an 8th magnitude star in Triangulum constellation. In 2005, a planetary companion or brown dwarf was announced in orbit around this star. At the time, the parallax estimate was , which would suggest a distance of with a high margin of error. In 2007, van Leeuwen published a revised parallax measurement of , which corresponds to a distance of with a smaller but still significant margin of error. In 2022 the Gaia spacecraft measured a parallax of which is a distance of with an error of only . It has a spectral classification of K1II-III, making it a giant star that has evolved away from the main sequence. The mass is 1.2 times the Sun's, while measurements of the star's radius give estimates of . COROT
CoRoT (French: ; English: Convection, Rotation and planetary Transits) was a space telescope mission which operated from 2006 to 2013. The mission's two objectives were to search for extrasolar planets with short orbital periods, particularly those of large terrestrial size, and to perform asteroseismology by measuring solar-like oscillations in stars. The mission was led by the French Space Agency (CNES) in conjunction with the European Space Agency (ESA) and other international partners. Among the notable discoveries was CoRoT-7b, discovered in 2009 which became the first exoplanet shown to have a rock or metal-dominated composition. Extrasolar Planet
An exoplanet or extrasolar planet is a planet outside the Solar System. The first possible evidence of an exoplanet was noted in 1917 but was not recognized as such. The first confirmation of detection occurred in 1992. A different planet, initially detected in 1988, was confirmed in 2003. There are many methods of detecting exoplanets.
