Arthur Mather
Arthur Richard Mather (22 November 1925 – 4 June 2017) was an Australian cartoonist, illustrator, and novelist. He was the creating artist (and later also the writer) of one of Australia's most successful comics series, ''Captain Atom''. From the late 1950s until 1975 he worked in advertising and in his later years became a novelist. Life and career Mather was born in Melbourne and educated at Collingwood Technical School. He began working as an apprentice at a newspaper printer in Melbourne when he was 15, but also began drawing sporting, political and gag cartoons for local newspapers and magazines. Melbourne ( ; Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: ''Narrm'' or ''Naarm'') is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Its name generally refers to a metropolitan area known as Greater Melbourne, comprising an urban agglomeration of 31 local municipalities, although the name is also used specifically for the local municipality of City of Melbourne based around its central business area. Australian comics have been published since 1908 and Australian comics creators have gone to produce influential work in the global comics industry (especially in American comics), History 1900s ''Vumps'', the first Australian comic equivalent to British boy's papers, such as '' Boy's Own'', ''Chum'' and ''The Gem'' was published in September 1908. It featured illustrations, with the text printed below and lasted only one issue. 1910s On 7 October 1911 coloured comics appeared in ''The Comic Australian'', a weekly publication containing jokes and poetry, which continued for 87 issues until June 1913. AustLit: The Australian Literature Resource (also known as AustLit: Australian Literature Gateway; and AustLit: The Resource for Australian Literature), usually referred to simply as AustLit, is an internet-based, non-profit collaboration between researchers and librarians from Australian universities, led by the University of Queensland (UQ), designed to comprehensively record the history of Australian literary and story-making cultures. Y&R ANZ (formerly known as George Patterson Y&R) is an Australasian advertising agency. The agency was formed in 2005 when the international advertising holding conglomerate WPP Group acquired the Australian marketing communications company, The Communications Group (TCG). History The George Patterson agency was founded on 1 November 1934. George Patterson had started his advertising career at the age of 18 in 1908. He left McPherson's in 1913 and took on the job of advertising manager at a magazine in New York, before returning to Australia at the outbreak of war in 1914. In 1919, he started his first agency in a partnership with Norman Catts and Catts-Patterson became Australia's largest agency. One of the agency's early clients was Palmolive. Andrea Bresciani
Andrea Bresciani (29 January 1923 – 7 February 2006) was an Italian-born comics artist, illustrator, and animator. Of Slovenian origin, he was born Dušan Brešan in Tolmino (at the time part of Italy) and emigrated to Australia in 1950. Amongst his works were the Italian comic book series ''Geky Dor'' and ''Tony Falco'' and the widely syndicated Australian series ''Frontiers of Science''. In the latter part of his career he worked as a film and television animator for Hanna-Barbera and Marvel Productions. Bresciani died in Malvern, Australia at the age of 83. Life and career Bresciani was born Dušan Brešan to a Slovene family in Tolmino (at the time part of the Province of Gorizia in Italy but now a city in Slovenia). Captain Atom (Atlas Publications)
''Captain Atom'' is an Australian comic book series created and written by Jack Bellew with illustrations by Arthur Mather. It was published from 1948 to 1954, with 64 issues and it also appeared as strips in a number of Australian newspapers. The protagonist, the first to use the name, has no relation to the later American superhero Captain Atom, published by Charlton Comics in 1965 and subsequently by DC Comics in 1987. Background The fledgling publishing company Atlas Publications achieved its first major success with its ''Captain Atom''. It was drawn by Arthur Mather, who like Yaroslav Horak and Andrea Bresciani, became a regular artist for Atlas. Yaroslav Horak
Yaroslav Horak (12 June 1927 – 24 November 2020) was an Australian illustrator and comics artist, of ethnic Czech-Russian origin, best known for his work on the newspaper comic strip ''James Bond (comic strip), James Bond''. Biography Horak was born on 12 June 1927 in Harbin, China, the son of a Czech father and Russian mother. In 1939 his family migrated to Sydney, Australia prior to World War II. He began his career as a portrait painter but switched to illustration for the larger Australian magazine publishers. In 1948 Horak's first accepted comic strips were for ''Rick Davis'' (a detective adventure) and ''The Skyman'' (a mysterious costumed flyer) in 1948. He then moved to Syd Nicholls' Publications where he worked on ''Ray Thorpe'' (an adventure series) and ''Ripon – the Man from Outer Space'' (sci-fi). Atlas Publications
Atlas Publications was an Australian publishing company which operated from 1948 until 1958 and was based in Clifton Hill, a suburb of Melbourne. It published magazines and popular fiction, and the genre for which it was best known, adventure comics. It had no relation to the American company Atlas Comics which was active in the same period. History The company was founded in 1947 by Jack Bellew and George Warnecke, two former journalists at ''The Daily Telegraph'', and Clive Turnbull, who at the time was a staff writer and art critic for the Melbourne-based ''Herald''. The company was managed by Peter Ryan, who characterised the founders as "a small syndicate of well-off Melbourne lefty journalists".
