Arthur Dawson (footballer, Born 1907)
Arthur Dawson (22 April 1907 – April 1985) was an English professional footballer who played as an outside forward. After starting his career in local football with Portsmouth Rovers, he had spells with Burnley and Lancaster Town in the late 1920s. Dawson played 10 matches in the Football League Third Division North for Nelson in the 1930–31 season. Biography Arthur Dawson was born on 22 April 1907 in Cliviger, Lancashire. He was the nephew of England international football goalkeeper Jerry Dawson. He died in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, in April 1985. Career Dawson started his career in local football with Portsmouth Rovers. He was signed by Football League First Division side Burnley on amateur terms in August 1928 and was offered a professional contract a month later. Dawson played 15 Central League matches for the reserves, but failed to break into the first team and was released by the club at the end of the 1928–29 season without having made a senior appearance. Cliviger
Cliviger is a civil parish in the Borough of Burnley, in Lancashire, England. It is situated to the southeast of Burnley, and northwest of Todmorden. According to the 2011 census, the parish has a population of 2,238. Although the whole parish lies within the Borough of Burnley it is actually split between three post towns, with a few farms lying in either the Todmorden or Bacup postal areas. Nowadays, it is mainly a dormitory area for people working in Burnley and other towns in East Lancashire and West Yorkshire. Contrary to popular (and in some cases mistaken local) belief there is no village of "Cliviger". Central League (football)
The Central League is a football league for reserve teams, primarily from the English Football League. For sponsorship purposes, it was branded as the Final Third Development League until the 2015/16 season. The league was formed in 1911 and in its early years consisted of a mix of first teams and reserve teams. However, when the Football League Third Division North was created in 1921, all the first teams in the Central League became founder members. Since then, the league has been for reserve teams only, and eventually expanded to include virtually every professional team in the South, Midlands and North of England. Southern teams used to play in the Football Combination. Wigan ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas, Lancashire, River Douglas. Carlisle ( , ; from xcb, Caer Luel) is a city that lies within the Northern English county of Cumbria, south of the Scottish border at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season.
