Art Center Sarasota
Art Center Sarasota is the community art center in Sarasota, Florida. The Center includes four rotating exhibition galleries and a sculpture garden. It is member-funded and offers adult and youth classes, workshops, and programs. The Center was established in 1926 as the Sarasota Art Association. History The Sarasota Art Association (SAA) was established in 1926 as the first arts organization in Sarasota. Founder Marcia Rader, Art Supervisor of the Sarasota School System, was the driving force behind the initial meetings of local art supporters who formed the association. The first official meeting of the SAA took place on a Friday evening in February of 1932. Jerry Farnsworth
Jerry Farnsworth (1895–1983) was an American artist. He was born in Dalton, Georgia and studied at the Corcoran School of Art under Charles W. Hawthorne. During 1942 and 1943 he was the Artist-in-Residence at the University of Illinois. Farnsworth also worked in a soda dispensing drug store, as a Fuller Brush Man, as a Western Union messenger boy, and in a cotton mill and steel mill. Farnsworth's awards include six from the National Academy of Design (1941), one from the National Arts Club (1941), one from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1945) and one from Grand Central Galleries (1928). Farnsworth belonged to the National Arts Club, an Academician of the National Academy of Design, the Salmagundi Club, Washington Society of Art and the Provincetown Art Association. Syd Solomon
Syd Solomon (July 12, 1917 – January 28, 2004) was an American abstract artist. He spent most of his time in his homes in both East Hampton, NY and Sarasota, Florida, which influenced many of his paintings. His works have been presented at The Guggenheim, The Whitney, Corcoran Gallery of Art, The Wadsworth Athenaeum and several others. Early life Solomon was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, to a Jewish family. He started painting in high school. After high school, he studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1935 to 1938. In 1940, he enlisted in the Engineer Aviation Regiment, First Camouflage Battalion of the military. During this time, Solomon helped design camouflage for the California coast near the San Francisco area. Later he was assigned to the Royal Engineer Camouflage Corps in London, where he designed camouflage to be used against the Germans in World War II. Hilton Leech
The Hilton Leech House and Amagansett Art School is a historic school in Sarasota, Florida. Named for artist Hilton Leech (Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1906 - Died in Virginia City, Montana 1969), it is located at 1666 Hillview Street. On June 22, 1995, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Leech taught painting at the Ringling School of Art from 1931 until 1936 and again from 1939 until 1945. After World War II he opened his own school the Amagansett Art School at 1666 Hillview Street in Sarasota. Leech painted watercolor murals at the Joel W. The Sarasota School of Architecture, sometimes called Sarasota Modern, is a regional style of post-war modern architecture (1941–1966) that emerged on Florida's Central West Coast, in and around the city of Sarasota, Florida. George David Yater (November 30, 1910 – April 15, 1993) was an Indiana-born painter associated with the Cape Cod School of Art, and most well known for his watercolors. Family life George David Yater was born to James Yater and Flora May Price Yater on November 30, 1910, in Madison, Indiana. One of four children, his father was an electrician. He married Shirley Pell in 1939. The couple had one son, David Pell Yater, born 1942, and one daughter, Marjorie Ellen Yater, born 1948. He is buried, alongside his wife, in the Snow Cemetery, in Truro, Massachusetts.
