''Art-Language: The Journal of Conceptual Art'' (1969-1985) was a magazine published by the conceptual artists of Art & Language. Involving more than 20 artists in the United States, Europe, and Australia, and covering almost 20 years production, it is one of the most extensive artworks of conceptual art and is regarded as an important influence on both conceptual art and contemporary art. I don't understand quite a good deal of what is said by Art-Language, but I admire the investigatory energies, the tireless spade-work (not calling one one), the full commitment to the reestablishment of a valid language by which to discuss art and the occasional humour in their writings. Conceptual art, also referred to as conceptualism, is art in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic, technical, and material concerns. Some works of conceptual art, sometimes called installations, may be constructed by anyone simply by following a set of written instructions. This method was fundamental to American artist Sol LeWitt's definition of conceptual art, one of the first to appear in print: Tony Godfrey, author of ''Conceptual Art (Art & Ideas)'' (1998), asserts that conceptual art questions the nature of art, a notion that Joseph Kosuth elevated to a definition of art itself in his seminal, early manifesto of conceptual art, ''Art after Philosophy'' (1969). Art & Language
Art & Language is a conceptual artists' collaboration that has undergone many changes since it was created in the late 1960s. The group was founded by artists who shared a common desire to combine intellectual ideas and concerns with the creation of art. The first issue of the group's journal, '' Art-Language'', was published in November 1969 in England. First years The Art & Language group was founded around 1967 in the United Kingdom by Terry Atkinson (b. 1939), David Bainbridge (b. 1941), Michael Baldwin (b. 1945) and Harold Hurrell (b. 1940). The group was critical of what was considered mainstream modern art practices at the time. Charles Townsend Harrison
Charles Townsend Harrison (11 February 1942 Chesham, Buckinghamshire – 6 August 2009 Banbury, Oxfordshire), BA Hons (Cantab), MA (Cantab), PhD (London) was a UK art historian who taught Art History for many years and was Emeritus Professor of History and Theory of Art at the Open University. Although he denied being an artist himself, he was a full participant and catalyst in the Art and Language group. Charles Harrison was educated at Cambridge University and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London from 1961 to 1967. He was tutor in Art History at the Open University from 1977–2005, Reader in Art History there from 1985-1994, Professor of the History and Theory of Art from 1994–2008, Professor Emeritus from 2008–2009, and Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago in 1991 and 1996, and Visiting Professor at the University of Texas in 1997. David Bainbridge (artist)
David Bainbridge (* 1941 in Barnsley, Yorkshire, Great Britain; † 30 June 2013) was a British sculptor, Conceptual Artist and member of the artist group Art & Language. Life and work David Bainbridge studied at the St. Martin's School of Art in London from 1963 to 1966. He taught at Birmingham College of Art from 1966 to 1969 and at Lanchester Polytechnic in Coventry from 1969 to 1971 and on Hull College of Art + Stourbridge College of Art from 1971 until retirement. Bainbridge worked with the "Fine-Artz-Group" on "" Action Chair "" in 1964. He participated in the Sculpture Exhibition at St. Martins School of Art in London in 1966. In 1969 he had an exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum. David Bainbridge became a member of the Art & Language artist group in 1969 and remained so until the mid-1970s. It was created in English in the summer of 1983 and published in the collective's journal, Art-Language, volume 5, n°2 of March 1984. Sol LeWitt
Solomon "Sol" LeWitt (September 9, 1928 – April 8, 2007) was an American artist linked to various movements, including conceptual art and minimalism. LeWitt came to fame in the late 1960s with his wall drawings and "structures" (a term he preferred instead of "sculptures") but was prolific in a wide range of media including drawing, printmaking, photography, painting, installation, and artist's books. He has been the subject of hundreds of solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world since 1965. The first biography of the artist, ''Sol LeWitt: A Life of Ideas'', by Lary Bloom, was published by Wesleyan University Press in the spring of 2019. Stephen Kaltenbach
Stephen J. Kaltenbach (born 1940) is an American artist and author based in Sacramento, California. Early life and education Kaltenbach was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. He attended the University of California, Davis between 1963 and 1967, earning a B.A. and M.A. At UC Davis, Kaltenbach studied alongside notable artists including David Gilhooly, Richard Shaw and Bruce Nauman. Career After graduating, Kaltenbach spent three years in New York City, producing paintings and a variety of conceptual work including bronze time capsules, graffiti, sidewalk plaques and hoax advertisements. He exhibited alongside Richard Serra, Eva Hesse, Alan Saret and Bruce Nauman at the Leo Castelli Gallery show "Nine" in 1968, and had a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1969. Daniel Buren
Daniel Buren (born 25 March 1938, in Boulogne-Billancourt) is a French conceptual artist, painter, and sculptor. He has won numerous awards including the Golden Lion for best pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1986), the International Award for best artist in Stuttgart (1991) and the prestigious Premium Imperiale for painting in Tokyo in 2007.
