Arrow Sport A2-60
The Arrow Sport was a two-seat sporting biplane aircraft built in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. Design and construction The plane was designed by Swen Swanson and it was of largely conventional configuration with tailskid undercarriage, but was interesting in that the pilot and passenger sat side by side in the open cockpit, and because as originally designed, the fully cantilever wings lacked interplane struts – the upper wing attaching directly to the top of the fuselage. This latter feature proved so alarming to many prospective pilots that the manufacturer later supplied N-type struts that were of no real function other than to allay the aviators' fears. Arrow Aircraft And Motors
Arrow Aircraft and Motor Corporation was an American aircraft manufacturer based in Havelock, Nebraska in the 1920s and 1930s. It built a variety of light sporting aircraft. History The Arrow Aircraft Corporation founded on 27 March 1926 in Havelock, Nebraska by John D. Moore, George E. Moore, and Frederick J. Platz. In 1928, the Patriot Manufacturing Company, a truck body producer, was purchased and merged into the new entity, Arrow Aircraft and Motors. It began experimenting with using Ford V8 engines in aircraft in 1934. However, by 1939 the company was bankrupt, a consequence of the effect of the Great Depression, and cost overruns with LeBlond engines. Despite a hope that the increase in defense manufacturing – including a contract with Boeing – might save the company, its assets were later sold at two sheriff's sales in 1940. The LeBlond radial engines, later produced under the name Ken-Royce, were a family of 3-cylinder, 5-cylinder and 7-cylinder, air-cooled radial engines for aircraft, built in the 1930s by the LeBlond Aircraft Engine Corporation until the operation was sold to Rearwin Airplanes in 1937 and renamed Ken-Royce Engines. The Warren CP-2, also called the Warren Taperwing, or the Kinner Taperwing was the third and last aircraft built by engineering students at California Polytechnic College in the 1930s Design The aircraft is a side-by-side open cockpit biplane with conventional landing gear, powered by a Kinner K-5 radial engine. The wings used wooden spars and ribs with fabric covering. The fuel tank is mounted against the firewall. The fuselage was acquired from the liquidation of Arrow Aircraft in Lincoln, Nebraska. Operational history The aircraft was registered in the experimental category and several attempts were made to register it in the restricted category for aerial photography. New owner Clifford Bryant flew the aircraft from Fresno, California until a partial motor mount failure caused the engine to nearly fall off in flight. Menasco Pirate
The Menasco Pirate series were four-cylinder, air-cooled, in-line, inverted aero-engines, built by the Menasco Motors Company of Burbank, California, for use in light general and sport aircraft during the 1930s and 1940s. The Menasco engines came in both normally aspirated and supercharged forms, with the supercharged models exhibiting superior performance at higher altitudes, with a relatively small increase in dimensions and weight. The Menasco Motors Company was an American aircraft engine and component manufacturer. History The company was organized by Albert S. Menasco in 1926 to convert World War I surplus Salmson 9 (water-cooled engine), Salmson Z-9 water-cooled nine-cylinder radials into air-cooled engines for private use. His association with Jack Northrop, John K. (Jack) Northrop and his flying wing project in the late 1920s convinced him of the need for a new configuration of aircraft engine: an inverted in-line air-cooled layout that would have the propeller shaft on top for better ground clearance and improved pilot vision. Arrow Model F
__NOTOC__ The Arrow Model F or the Arrow Sport V-8 was a two-seat low-wing braced monoplane aircraft built in the United States between 1934 and 1938. It was built originally to a request by the US Bureau of Air Commerce to investigate the feasibility of using automobile engines to power aircraft. Accordingly, the Model F was fitted with a modified Ford V8 engine. Like the Arrow Sport before it, the Model F seated its pilot and passenger side-by-side in an open cockpit and was marketed for $1500. Development The Arrow Sport F was specifically built to accommodate the low-cost, yet heavy Arrow F V-8 engine, an aircraft modification of the Ford V-8. The engine was designed by Ford Engineer David E. Anderson with an aluminum oil pan, aluminum cylinders, and a 2:1 gear reduction to drive the prop at reasonable rpm ranges.
