Arnau Church
The Arnau Church (german: Kirche Arnau) of St. Catherine of Alexandria is a Brick Gothic church 8 km east of Kaliningrad near the Pregolya River and the Russian- Lithuanian border. It was built in the 14th century as a Catholic church in the East Prussian village of Arnau (modern Rodniki) and until recently contained more than 200 medieval frescoes from the 14th century. It became a Lutheran church after the Reformation and the frescoes were whitewashed, then uncovered in the early 20th century. The graveyard contains the tomb of Theodor von Schön. After 1945, when the Kaliningrad region became part of the Soviet Union, the church was used for grain storage. In 2003 a restoration campaign was launched, with the church building then belonging to the Kaliningrad History Museum, which used it for exhibitions and orthodox liturgy. Theodor Von Schön
Heinrich Theodor von Schön (20 January 1773 – 23 July 1856) was a Prussian statesman who assisted in the liberal reforms in Prussia during the Napoleonic Wars. Biography Schön was born in Schreitlauken, Tilsit district, East Prussia (now Šereitlaukis, Lithuania). He studied law and political science at the University of Königsberg. In 1793, he entered the Prussian government service and was rapidly promoted, serving as governor. After the Peace of Tilsit, he rendered assistance in carrying out the reforms of Baron vom Stein and Karl August von Hardenberg, and to him is attributed the authorship of the ''Politisches Testament'', which Stein issued upon his retirement from office. In addition, Schön's memorandum on the abolition of serfdom was the basis of the law of emancipation. Fresco (plural ''frescos'' or ''frescoes'') is a technique of mural painting executed upon freshly laid ("wet") lime plaster. Water is used as the vehicle for the dry-powder pigment to merge with the plaster, and with the setting of the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall.
