Army Group Reserve (France)
Army Group Reserve (french: Groupe d'armées de réserve) or Army Group Rupture (french: Groupe d'armées de rupture), G. A. R.) was a grouping of French field armies during World War I, which was created on January 1, 1917 to fight in the Offensive of Chemin des Dames. The Army group was dissolved on May 8, 1917 after the failure of the Offensive. The Army Group was recreated after the German spring offensive of 1918. 1st Army (France)
The First Army (french: 1re Armée) was a field army of France that fought during World War I and World War II. It was also active during the Cold War. First World War On mobilization in August 1914, General Auguste Dubail was put in the charge of the First Army, which comprised the 7th, 8th, 13th, 14th, and 21st Army Corps, two divisions of cavalry and one reserve infantry division. It was massed between Belfort and the general line Mirecourt-Lunéville with headquarters at Epinal. First Army then took part, along with the French Second Army, in the Invasion of Lorraine. The First Army intended to take the strongly defended town of Sarrebourg. Bavarian Crown Prince Rupprecht, commander of the 6th Army (German Empire), German Sixth Army, was tasked with stopping the French invasion. Émile Fayolle
Marie Émile Fayolle (14 May 1852 – 27 August 1928) was a French general during World War I and a diplomat, elevated to the dignity of Marshal of France. Early life Marie Émile Fayolle was born on May 14, 1852 in Puy-en-Velay, at ''9 rue du Chenebouterie'', a road renamed in 1961 ''"rue du Maréchal-Fayolle"''. He is the first of six children born from the marriage of Jean Pierre Auguste Fayolle, lacemaker in Le Puy, and his wife Marie Rosine Badiou. He married in 1883 to Marie Louise Augustine Collangettes, in Clermont-Ferrand, and had two children. He is the grandfather of the pilot Émile Fayolle and the great-grandfather of Anne Pingeotb, mother of Mazarine Pingeot. Fayolle studied at the ''École polytechnique'' from 1873, where he graduated with the class of 1875 and was commissioned into the artillery. Joseph Alfred Micheler
Joseph Alfred Micheler (23 September 1861 Phalsbourg, France – 17 March 1931 Nice, France) was a French general in the First World War. Life Born in Phalsbourg, Moselle from a Lorrainian family which preferred to be French than German when the city was annexed by the Kaiser in 1871. He entered St. Cyr in October 1880, and was appointed a sub-lieutenant on the completion of his course in 1882. He was promoted lieutenant in 1886, captain in 1891, major in 1901 and lieutenant-colonel in 1909. Three years later he was made a colonel. At the outbreak of World War I he served as chief-of-staff to VI Corps. In October 1914, he was promoted brigadier, and in January 1915 was transferred as chief-of-staff to the First Army. On 3 August 1915, he took over command of the 53rd Infantry Division, being later (25 March 1916) promoted a temporary General of Division and appointed to command XXXVIII Army Corps. Jean Degoutte
Jean Marie Joseph Degoutte (18 April 1866, Charnay, Rhône – 31 October 1938) was a French general active in the colonies and the First World War. Colonial career Degoutte joined the 31st Artillery Regiment on 7 March 1887 and then attended Saint Cyr where he graduated 9th out of 435. After graduating he joined a Zouave unit in Tunisia. In 1895 his request to join the French expedition to Madagascar was denied, resulting in him taking a three-month leave. During that leave he accompanied a group of Jesuits that traveled to Madagascar on a civilian steamer. Arriving there amidst the landing of the French expeditionary forces, he was arrested by General Dechesnes, but Colonel Bailloud was able to persuade his senior officers to release Degoutte and utilise his language skills. Degoutte returned to Tunisia in March 1896 where he remained until 1899, when he entered the Ecole Superieure de Guerre. Georges Louis Humbert (8 April 1862 – 1921) was a French general during World War I. He was the son of Émile Siméon Humbert, a gendarme and Nathalie Augustine Eulalie Breton. Career He participated in the Tonkin Campaign (1885–1887), the Second Madagascar expedition (1895–1896) and the Tunisia Expedition of 1906.
