Georges Louis Humbert
Georges Louis Humbert (8 April 1862 – 1921) was a French general during World War I. He was the son of Émile Siméon Humbert, a gendarme and Nathalie Augustine Eulalie Breton. Career He participated in the Tonkin Campaign (1885–1887), the Second Madagascar expedition (1895–1896) and the Tunisia Expedition of 1906. On 23 June 1907, he became Colonel of the 96th Infantry Regiment and on 23 March 1912 General of the 56th Infantry Brigade. Second Madagascar Expedition
The Second Madagascar expedition was a French military intervention which took place in 1894–95, sealing the conquest of the Merina Kingdom on the island of Madagascar by France. It was the last phase of the Franco-Hova War and followed the First Madagascar expedition of 1883–85. Background Madagascar was at the time an independent country, ruled from the capital of Antananarivo by the Merina dynasty from the central highlands. The French invasion was triggered by the refusal of Queen Ranavalona III to accept a protectorate treaty from France, despite the signature of the Franco- Hova Treaty of 1885 following the First Madagascar expedition. Tonkin Campaign
The Tonkin campaign was an armed conflict fought between June 1883 and April 1886 by the French against, variously, the Vietnamese, Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army and the Chinese Guangxi and Yunnan armies to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a French protectorate there. The campaign, complicated in August 1884 by the outbreak of the Sino-French War and in July 1885 by the Cần Vương nationalist uprising in Annam (central Vietnam), which required the diversion of large numbers of French troops, was conducted by the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla.
