Armstrong, Ontario
Armstrong ( 2016 Population 1,166) is a township in the Timiskaming District of Ontario. The only population centre in the township is the community of Earlton. The township is named after Samuel Armstrong, an Independent member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for Parry Sound from 1886 to 1890. History Earlton began to be settled in 1900 as a lumber community by pioneers mostly from York County, soon followed by French-speaking farmers who cultivated the flat prairie-like land of the surrounding Great Clay Belt. In 1904, its post office was opened. The postmaster, Edward Albert Brasher, named the community after his son Earl. In 1921, Armstrong Township was incorporated. Samuel Armstrong (Canadian Politician)
Samuel Armstrong (February 24, 1844 – April 3, 1921) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Parry Sound in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1886 to 1890 as an Independent member. He was born in Ross, County Wexford, Ireland in 1844, the son of Samuel Armstrong, and came to Canada West with his family in 1848. Armstrong was self-educated in Toronto and attended some public school in Thorold and Toronto. The family eventually settled in the Parry Sound district. He was named a justice of the peace in 1868. In 1870, he married Catherine Taylor. Armstrong was postmaster for the village of McKellar from 1871 to 1886 and served as reeve from 1872 to 1887. He operated a general store and sawmill and was also involved in the timber trade and the construction of railways and roads. He supported prohibition of alcohol and extending the vote to women. NorOntair, stylized as norOntair, was a Canadian regional airline operating in northern Ontario from October 18, 1971 to March 29, 1996. It was as a subsidiary of the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC), a provincial Crown agency of the Government of Ontario, with the stated goal of creating east-west links across northern Ontario. History ONTC's first foray into air services began when it subcontracted flying operations to various airlines including Bradley Air Service (First Air), Austin Airways, Air-Dale Ltd and OnAir (taken over by Bearskin Airlines).
