Billy Armfield
William Christopher Armfield (7 July 1904 – 1985) was an English professional footballer of the 1930s. Born in Birmingham, he joined Gillingham from Exeter City in 1932 and went on to make 30 appearances for the club in The Football League, scoring seven goals. Anne Constance Smedley, married name Constance Armfield, (20 June 1876 – 9 March 1941) was a British artist, playwright, author and founder of the International Association of Lyceum Clubs. Life Smedley was born in Handsworth near Birmingham in 1876. Her well-off and educated parents allowed their daughter to become a student at the Birmingham School of Art. Smedley lived with disabilities that are thought to have come from childhood polio. Dennis Armfield
Dennis Brett Armfield (born 22 December 1986) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). After moving from Canberra to Perth as a child, Armfield spent all his junior years playing rugby union, where, among his duties, he was his team's designated place-kicker. After converting to Australian Rules Football at the age of 17, where he played for the local Kalamunda Football Club, before being recruited that year by Swan Districts Football Club in Western Australia in 2002, playing as a utility/midfielder. He worked his way through the Swan Districts junior ranks, and in 2006 was awarded the club's rookie of the year award, as well as being best on ground in the 2006 reserves grand final. Jimmy Armfield
James Christopher Armfield, (21 September 1935 – 22 January 2018) was an English professional football player and manager who latterly worked as a football pundit for BBC Radio Five Live. He played the whole of his Football League career at Blackpool, usually at right back. Between 1954 and 1971 he played 627 games in all competitions, scored six goals, and spent a decade as the club's captain. He also represented the England national team 43 times between 1959 and 1966, and captained them in 15 games. He was a member of England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad. John Armfield (1797–1871) was an American slave trader. He was the co-founder of Franklin & Armfield, "the largest slave trading firm" in the United States. He was also the developer of Beersheba Springs, and a co-founder of Sewanee: The University of the South. Early life John Armfield was born in 1797 in North Carolina to Quaker parents. He was of English descent. Career Armfield took up slave trading in the 1820s. For example, he sold a slave in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1827. In 1828, Armfield and his uncle by marriage, Isaac Franklin, formed the partnership of Franklin & Armfield to buy slaves in the mid-Atlantic states (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia) and re-sell them in the newly opened territories of the Deep South. Lillian May Armfield ISM KPFSM (3 December 1884 – 26 August 1971) was an Australian nurse and pioneering Sydney female police detective, one of the first women to serve in that role. Early life Lillian May Armfield was born in Mittagong, New South Wales, on 3 December 1884 to George Armfield and Elizabeth Armfield (née Wright). Her first job in 1907 was as a nurse at the Callan Park Hospital for the Insane in Callan Park, Sydney. She left that role for a pioneering position as a female police detective in the New South Wales Police Force on 1 July 1915. When recruited as probationary special constable, she was 5 ft 7¾ ins (172 cm) tall, weighed 12 st. 10 lbs. (81 kg), and had light brown eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. Maxwell Armfield
Maxwell Ashby Armfield (5 October 1881 – 23 January 1972) was an English artist, illustrator and writer. Life Born to a Quaker family in Ringwood, Hampshire, Armfield was educated at Sidcot School and at Leighton Park School. In 1887 he was admitted to the Birmingham School of Art, then under the headmastership of Edward R. Taylor and considered a major centre of the Arts and Crafts Movement. There he studied under Henry Payne and Arthur Gaskin and, outside of the school, received instruction in tempera painting from Joseph Southall at Southall's studio in Edgbaston. Neil Geoffrey Armfield (born 22 April 1955) is an Australian director of theatre, film and opera. Biography Born in Sydney, Armfield is the third and youngest son of Len, a factory worker at the nearby Arnott's Biscuits factory and Nita Armfield. He was brought up in the suburb of Concord, adjacent to Exile Bay. He was educated at the Homebush Boys High School where, in 1972, he was the Vice-Captain. In that year, Armfield directed the school's production of Milne's "Toad of Toad Hall" which garnered him the award of "Best Director" at the NSW High Schools Drama Festival. Robert Franklin Armfield (July 9, 1829 – November 9, 1898) was the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina from 1875 to 1876, and a U.S. Representative from North Carolina between 1879 and 1883. Biography Armfield, born near Greensboro, North Carolina in 1829, attended the common schools and later graduated from Trinity College (now Duke University). After reading law with John A. Gilmer, he was admitted to the bar in 1845 and practiced law in Yadkinville. In 1861, at the outbreak of the American Civil War, Armfield enlisted in the Confederate States Army. He served as lieutenant and later as lieutenant colonel of the Thirty-eighth Regiment of North Carolina state troops. After the war, Armfield moved to Statesville and resumed his law practice.
