Texarkana is a city in the U.S. state of Arkansas and the county seat of Miller County, on the southwest border of the state. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 29,387. The city is located across the state line from its twin city of Texarkana, Texas. The city was founded at a railroad intersection on December 8, 1873, and was incorporated in Arkansas on August 10, 1880. Texarkana and its Texas counterpart are the principal cities of the Texarkana metropolitan area, which in 2021 was ranked 289th in the United States with a population of 147,174, according to the United States Census Bureau. Miller County is a county located in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 43,462. The county seat is Texarkana. Miller County is part of the Texarkana, TX-AR, Metropolitan Statistical Area. When first formed, Miller County was Arkansas's sixth county, established on April 1, 1820, and named for James Miller, the first governor of the Arkansas Territory. Additionally, Miller County was the first of the state's counties to be formed upon the creation of the Arkansas Territory. Interstate 49 In Arkansas
Interstate 49 (I-49) is an Interstate Highway in the state of Arkansas. There are two main sections of the highway across different sides of the state. The southern section starts at the Louisiana state line, then runs to Texarkana, at the Texas state line. The northern section begins at I-40 and at U.S. Highway 71 (US 71) in Alma and runs north to the Missouri state line, where the freeway continues into Missouri. Route description I-49 enters the state from Louisiana between Ida and Doddridge. The first interchange in Arkansas is with US 71 at exit 4. The Interstate passes near the town of Fouke, where it has another interchange with US 71. Arkansas Highway 237 (AR 237 and Hwy. 237) is a north–south state highway in Miller County. The route of runs north from Highway 160 in the extreme southwest corner of the state along the east side of Texarkana to US 67. Route description The route begins at Highway 160 about east of the Texas state line. The route runs north through the Sulphur River Wildlife Management Area to intersect I-49 south of Texarkana. Now entering the city, the route forms a brief concurrency with U.S. Route 71. The route now continues due north as Rondo Road to intersect Genoa Road and 9th Street. Arkansas Highway 134 (AR 134, Hwy. 134) is an east–west state highway in Miller County, Arkansas. The route of runs from US Route 71 (US 71) near Fouke to US 82 in Garland. Route description AR 134 begins near Fouke and runs east underneath Highway 549, but does not have a junction with the route. The route runs north near the Red River and runs to Highway 196. Highway 134 turns east and runs to Garland, when it terminates at US 82. Former Choctaw route This route first appeared on the October 1928 state highway map from Highway 9 to Choctaw; the current Highway 134 also first appeared at this time.
