Arkansas 35
Arkansas Highway 35 is a northwest–southeast state highway in southeast Arkansas. The route runs from Dewey near the Mississippi River northwest to Arkansas Highway 5 in Benton. Route description The route begins in Dewey at Macon Lake Road near Island number 81 on the Mississippi River. AR 35 runs through bayous and fields in Chicot County, briefly entering Desha County for a junction with AR 159/ AR 208 in Halley. Returning to Chicot County, AR 35 intersects the four-lane divided US 65/US 278 and US 165 east of Dermott, before entering the city. AR 35 serves Dermott as Speedway St before entering Drew County. The highway runs south of the Seven Devils Swamp WMA along the Arkansas Midland Railroad tracks until Monticello. AR 35 is concurrent with US 278, and later US 425 until the northwest corner of Monticello, where AR 35 turns northwest away from US 425. The following is a list of state highways in Arkansas. The state does not use a numbering convention. Generally the two-digit odd numbered highways run north–south with a few exceptions; and even-numbered two-digit state highways run east–west with a few exceptions. Arkansas has long had a stigma of poor roads, dating from the "Arkansas Roads Scandal" playing a prominent role in state politics through the 1920s and 1930s, periodic allegations of corruption, waste, and fraud, and a long-running struggle to adequately fund the operation, maintenance and expansion of a large highway system serving a rural state. The state has received the designation of "worst roads in America" from several publications throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, with Interstate 30 and Interstate 40 often ranking particularly poorly among truckers. Interstate 69 (I-69) is a proposed Interstate Highway that will pass through the southeastern part of the US state of Arkansas. The only section of Future I-69 that is currently open to traffic is the eastern leg of the Monticello Bypass. This section of the Monticello Bypass is currently two lanes and signed as U.S. Highway 278 Bypass (US 278 Byp.). Planned extension I-69 has been divided into a number of sections of independent utility (SIUs). SIU 12 (Arkansas portion) I-69 will enter Arkansas on the planned Charles W. Dean Bridge south of Arkansas City, then continue west to U.S. Highway 65 (US 65) near McGehee; US 278 will also be rerouted there from its present crossing with US 82 at the Greenville Bridge. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. The Arkansas Midland Railroad is a Class III short-line railroad headquartered in Malvern, Arkansas. AKMD operates of line in Arkansas consisting of seven disconnected branch lines and two sister railroads, the Prescott & Northwestern (PNW) and the Warren & Saline River (WSR). The AKMD branches were formerly part of the Union Pacific Railroad, or a predecessor, while the PNW and WSR lines were acquired from Potlatch Corporation. All branch lines connect (interchange traffic) with Union Pacific Railroad. Halley, Arkansas
Halley is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Desha County, Arkansas, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 United States census, 2020 census with a population of 44. History John J. Bowie (eldest brother of James Bowie) purchased land in the area in 1857. Construction of the Mississippi, Ouachita and Red River Railroad—the first chartered railway in Arkansas—began in 1852, and of track had been laid west from Eunice, Arkansas, Eunice by the start of the Civil War. The line passed through Bowie's land, and a stop there was called "Bowie Station". The railroad was completed after the war, but abandoned in 1875 after flooding on the Mississippi River damaged the railbed and bridges. In usage in the Southern United States, a bayou () is a body of water typically found in a flat, low-lying area. It may refer to an extremely slow-moving stream, river (often with a poorly defined shoreline), marshy lake, wetland, or creek.
