Argosy Casino Sioux City
Argosy Casino Sioux City was a riverboat casino located on the Missouri River in Sioux City, Iowa. It was owned by Penn National Gaming. History The first riverboat, the Sioux City Sue, opened in January 1993 after a couple of other licenses for a casino in Sioux City were granted but then later revoked. In 1994, the Sioux City Sue was replaced by the larger Belle of Sioux City. In 2004, the Argosy, which had been in operation for seven years in Kansas City, replaced the Belle of Sioux City. Penn National Gaming acquired the Argosy Gaming Company in October 2005. On April 17, 2014, the Argosy was ordered to shut down by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission because of a violation in state law where the casino failed to partner with a local non-profit group. The Iowa Supreme Court then ordered the casino to close by July 30, 2014. Sioux City () is a city in Woodbury and Plymouth counties in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 85,797 in the 2020 census, making it the fourth-largest city in Iowa. Argosy Gaming Company was an Alton, Illinois based casino operator. History The company through the political connections of its chairman William F. Cellini received the first gambling license in Illinois in modern times. It began operations in September 1991 with the opening of the Alton Belle Casino. Among the biggest initial investors was John Connors, brother of tennis champion Jimmy Connors, Illinois attorney and Democratic power-broker L. Thomas Lakin, as well as other influential St. Louis area businessmen. Jimmy Connors would later become a substantial investor with both brothers maintaining a 19 percent share after it went public.
