Argentine Naval Hydrographic Service
The Argentine Hydrographic Service ( es, Servicio de Hidrografía Naval, abbreviated SHN) is the branch of the Ministry of Defense responsible for providing hydrographic services. Background Created on January 1, 1879, as ''Oficina Central de Hidrografía'' ( en, Hydrographic Central Office) by decree 11.289 of President Nicolás Avellaneda. It became the current SHN on 1972 by National Law 19.922. Since 2007, it became part of the Ministry of Defense. The main mission of the SHN is to provide safe navigation on national waters. The service do so with the creation and maintenance of nautical charts, coastal marker buoys, and lighthouses. In concordance to the International Maritime Organization regulations, the SHN is also the global coordinator for the NAVAREA VI zone, which covers the South West Atlantic Ocean region being responsible for emitting alerts to ships at sea and coordinating search and rescue operations. RV Sonne
The RV'' Sonne'' (German for 'Sun') was a former German fishing trawler converted into a research vessel by Schichau Unterweser AG, doing mostly geoscience-related work for a variety of commercial and scientific clients. She was registered in Bremen. In 2015 she was sold to the Argentine institute CONICET and was renamed ARA ''Austral'' (Q-21). A new geoscientific research ship, also called RV ''Sonne'', replaced her role in Germany that same year. Career Rickmers Werft built ''Sonne'' in 1969 as a stern trawler and delivered her to ''Hochseefischerei Nordstern''. From her homeport of Bremerhaven she operated mainly in the waters around Iceland, Greenland and Labrador. ARA ''Petrel'' was a hydrographic survey boat of the Argentine Navy, built in the Cadenazzi Shipyard and based in Buenos Aires. The vessel is named after the petrel, a seabird that inhabits Argentina's littoral, and is the third Argentine naval ship with this name. Design ''Petrel'' was a coastal and fluvial research ship designed by the engineering team at Cadenazzi Shipyard, where it was built. It was powered by two diesel engines driving two propellers. ARA ''Cormorán'' (Q-15) is a hydrographic survey boat of the Argentine Navy, built in the Río Santiago Shipyard and based in Buenos Aires. The vessel is named after the cormorant, a seabird that inhabits Argentina’s littoral, and is the fourth Argentine naval ship with this name. Design ''Cormorán'' is a coastal and fluvial research ship designed by the engineering team at Río Santiago Shipyard, where it was built. Its hull has a metallic structure covered with cedar wooden planks, and its superstructure is made of aluminium. ARA ''Comodoro Rivadavia'' (Q-11) is a survey ship of the Argentine Navy assigned to the national Hydrographic Naval Service (SHN for ''Servicio de Hidrografia Naval'') which among other things is responsible of the maintenance of nautical charts and navigational aids Construction and equipment ''Comodoro Rivadavia'' was built by the Mestrina de Tigre shipyard, Buenos Aires.  She was laid down on July 17, 1971, and launched on December 2, 1972.  She was delivered to the Argentine Navy on December 6, 1974. The ship displaces 609 tons with standard load and 667 t with full load.  Her length measures 52.2 meters, her beam is 8.8 m and her draft is 2.6 m. The ship is powered by two 1160 hp Werkspoor Stork RHO-218K diesel engines, which allow the ship to reach a speed of 12 knots (22 km/h). ARA ''Puerto Deseado'' (Q-20) is an oceanographic survey ship in service in the Argentine Navy. She has a reinforced hull in order to operate in waters around Antarctica. History ''Puerto Deseado'' was built by Astilleros Argentinos Río de la Plata (Astarsa) shipyard in Tigre, Buenos Aires and commissioned into the Argentine Navy in 1978.
