Arendal Airport, Rådhuskaien ( no, Arendal flyvehavn, Rådhuskaien) was a water aerodrome in Arendal, Norway, which operated between 1935 and 1939. Situated at Rådhuskaien, it served the scheduled coastal seaplane service operated by Norwegian Air Lines. History The first water aerodrome in Arendal was a provisional facility built by the Royal Norwegian Navy Air Service in 1920. Arendal Naval Air Station was constructed as a landing site off the island of Merdø, several kilometers from the town center. It was staffed for 54 days between 12 July and 11 September before being closed. The Navy Air Service resumed use of the station for some weeks during late 1939. The need for an airport arose again in 1935, when Norwegian Air Lines commenced a coastal air service from Oslo to Bergen. Arendal Airport, Gullknapp ( no, Arendal lufthavn, Gullknapp; ) is a general aviation airport situated at Blakstadheia in Froland, Norway. It consists of a single 1,199-meter (3,650 ft) asphalt runway aligned 05/23. The airport is located about from the town center of Arendal. Plans for an airport in Aust-Agder were first proposed in the 1930s at Løddesøl. The airport operating company was founded in 1984 and construction on the original runway commenced in 1987 and was completed in 1992. It was paved in 1996, when an operating permission was granted. Agder is a county (''fylke'') and traditional region in the southern part of Norway. The county was established on 1 January 2020, when the old Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder counties were merged. Havørn Accident
The ''Havørn'' Accident ( no, Havørn-ulykken) was a controlled flight into terrain of a Junkers Ju 52 aircraft into the mountain Lihesten in Hyllestad, Norway on 16 June 1936 at 07:00. The aircraft, operated by Norwegian Air Lines, was en route from Bergen to Tromsø. The pilots were unaware that they were flying a parallel to the planned course, further east. The crew of four and three passengers were all killed in what was the first fatal aviation accident in Norway. The aircraft landed on a shelf on the mountain face. A first expedition found four bodies, but attempts to reach the shelf with the main part of the aircraft and three more bodies failed. A second party was sent out two days later, coordinated by Bernt Balchen and led by Boye Schlytter and Henning Tønsberg, saw the successful salvage of the remaining bodies.
