Area code 636 is a telephone area code in North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the east-central part of the U.S. state of Missouri, comprising mainly the western suburbs of St. Louis. It includes parts of Chesterfield and Fenton in St. Louis County, and all of Washington, Union, De Soto, Troy, St. Charles, Jefferson, and Warren counties, as well as the towns of High Hill and Jonesburg in Montgomery County. It was created in 1999 in an area code split from area code 314, which was one of the original North American area codes of 1947. The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is a telephone numbering plan for twenty-five regions in twenty countries, primarily in North America and the Caribbean. This group is historically known as World Zone 1 and has the international calling code ''1''. Some North American countries, most notably Mexico, do not participate in the NANP. The program had the goal of speeding the connecting times for long-distance calling by eliminating intermediary telephone operators. Telephone Numbers In Puerto Rico
Telephone numbers in Puerto Rico are assigned under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). Prior to March 1, 1996, Puerto Rico was one of many Caribbean islands served by area code 809. On that date Puerto Rico was assigned the new area code 787 (with the mnemonic PUR or PTR). Permissive dialing of 809 ended January 31, 1997. Within only four years, 787 was already on the brink of exhaustion due to the proliferation of cell phones and dial-up Internet connections. To solve the problem, 787 was overlaid with area code 939 in or about September 2001, with ten-digit dialing required for all calls. A split had been ruled out in order to spare Puerto Ricans the expense and burden of changing their numbers for the second time in a decade, the island's extremely dense population, and the lack of a suitable boundary for a split. 939 is primarily used for cell phones. "A Tale of Two Springfields" is the second episode of the twelfth season of the American animated television series ''The Simpsons'', and the 250th episode of the series overall in both broadcast and production order. It originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on November 5, 2000. In the episode, Homer discovers that Springfield has two different area codes and ends up leading a revolt that splits the town in two. The episode was written by John Swartzwelder and directed by Shaun Cashman and guest starred the Who. The episode was inspired by Don Payne, based on the area where his mother lived, where one side of town would spread rumors about the other side. Larry Doyle then pitched that the two sides of Springfield would be divided because of a telephone area code.
