2010 Leeds City Council Election
The 2010 Leeds City Council election took place on Thursday 6 May 2010 to elect members of Leeds City Council in England. It was held on the same day as the 2010 general election and other local elections across the UK. As per the election cycle, one third of the council's seats were up for election. The subsequently elected councillors replaced those elected when their individual seats were previously contested in 2006. The result of the election saw the Labour Party gain five council seats and take minority control of the council. They held 48 of the 99 total seats and negotiated a confidence-and-supply agreement with the two Green Party councillors to achieve a majority. It replaced a six-year coalition between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives, which had also been supported by the three Green councillors before the election. Election result This result had the following consequences for the total number of seats on the council after the election ...

Morley Borough Independent
The Morley Borough Independents (MBI) are a local political party in Leeds, West Yorkshire, founded in 2004. Their stated aim is to represent the interests of the residents of Morley and the former Municipal Borough of Morley on Leeds City Council, arguing they "are not effected by having to tow the party line laid down in Westminster" by national political parties including the Conservative Party, Labour Party and Liberal Democrats. History Founded in January 2004, prior to the upcoming Leeds City Council election in May, the creation of the Morley Borough Independents formalised an informal grouping of independent council candidates who had stood in the Morley North and Morley South wards since 2002 as well as elected Morley Town Councillors since the Town Council's creation in 2000. They had successfully coordinated the elections of two independent Morley North councillors in 2002 (Robert Finnigan) and 2003 (Thomas Leadley). A number of MBI candidates and councillors ...

Greenbelt
A green belt is a policy and land-use zone designation used in land-use planning to retain areas of largely undeveloped, wild, or agricultural land surrounding or neighboring urban areas. Similar concepts are greenways or green wedges, which have a linear character and may run through an urban area instead of around it. In essence, a green belt is an invisible line designating a border around a certain area, preventing development of the area and allowing wildlife to return and be established. Purposes In those countries which have them, the stated objectives of green belt policy are to: * Protect natural or semi-natural environments; * Improve air quality within urban areas; * Ensure that urban dwellers have access to countryside, with consequent educational and recreational opportunities; * Protect the unique character of rural communities that might otherwise be absorbed by expanding suburbs. The green belt has many benefits for people: * Walking, camping, and biking areas c ...

Independent (politician)
An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party, and therefore choose not to affiliate with them. Some independent politicians may be associated with a party, perhaps as former members of it, or else have views that align with it, but choose not to stand in its name, or are unable to do so because the party in question has selected another candidate. Others may belong to or support a political party at the national level but believe they should not formally represent it (and thus be subject to its policies) at another level. In running for public office, independents sometimes choose to form a party or alliance with other independents, and may formally register their party or alliance. Even where the word "independent" is used, s ...
