Ardrossan (ward)
Ardrossan is one of the nine electoral wards of North Ayrshire Council. Created in 2022, the ward elects three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system and covers an area with a population of 10,359 people. Boundaries The ward was created following the 2019 Reviews of Electoral Arrangements which were instigated following the implementation of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018. Ardrossan was formed from three previous wards, taking in the mainland area from the former Ardrossan and Arran ward – the Isle of Arran being given its own ward – as well as an area of Ardrossan which was part of the former Saltcoats ward and a rural area from the former Dalry and West Kilbride ward. Ardrossan and Arran was one of the 10 Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, wards used to elect members of North Ayrshire Council. Created in 2007 following the Fourth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements, the ward elected three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system. Originally a four-member ward, Ardrossan and Arran was reduced in size following a boundary review ahead of the 2017 North Ayrshire Council election, 2017 election. As a result of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018, the ward was abolished in 2022. The ward was a Scottish National Party (SNP) stronghold with the party holding at least half the seats between 2012 and 2021. Dalry and West Kilbride was one of the 10 Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, wards used to elect members of North Ayrshire Council. Created in 2007 following the Fourth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements, the ward elected three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system. Saltcoats was one of the 10 electoral wards of North Ayrshire Council. Created in 2017 following the Fifth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements, the ward elected three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system. As a result of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018, the ward was abolished in 2022. The area was politically split after each election returned one councillor for both the Scottish National Party (SNP) and Labour as well as one independent councillor. Boundaries The ward was created following the Fifth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements ahead of the 2017 Scottish local elections. This was the first review after the introduction of the single transferable vote electoral system in 2007. Ardrossan
Ardrossan (; ) is a town on the North Ayrshire coast in southwestern Scotland. The town has a population of 10,670 and forms part of a conurbation with Saltcoats and Stevenston known as the 'Three Towns'. Ardrossan is located on the east shore of the Firth of Clyde. History Ardrossan's roots can be traced to the construction of its castle 'Cannon Hill', thought to be in around 1140, by Simon de Morville. Single transferable vote (STV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which voters cast a single vote in the form of a ranked-choice ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternate preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running. STV aims to approach proportional representation based on votes cast in the district where it is used, so that each vote is worth about the same as another. Firth Of Clyde
The Firth of Clyde is the mouth of the River Clyde. It is located on the west coast of Scotland and constitutes the deepest coastal waters in the British Isles (it is 164 metres deep at its deepest). The firth is sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean by the Kintyre peninsula, which encloses the outer firth in Argyll and Ayrshire. Horse Isle
Horse Isle ( gd, Eilean nan Each) is an uninhabited island located in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland near the seaside town of Ardrossan. It is a nature reserve, run by the RSPB. Geography The small, rocky island lies at , around west of the North Ayrshire town of Ardrossan. Although no higher than , it provides some shelter to Ardrossan harbour. The Arran ferry passes close to the island. 2022 North Ayrshire Council Election
Elections to North Ayrshire Council took place on 5 May 2022 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. As with other Scottish council elections, it was held using single transferable vote (STV) – a form of proportional representation – in which multiple candidates are elected in each ward and voters rank candidates in order of preference. For the third consecutive election, the Scottish National Party (SNP) received the highest vote share and returned the most seats at 12 – one more than the previous election.
