Saltcoats (ward)
Saltcoats was one of the 10 electoral wards of North Ayrshire Council. Created in 2017 following the Fifth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements, the ward elected three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system. As a result of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018, the ward was abolished in 2022. The area was politically split after each election returned one councillor for both the Scottish National Party (SNP) and Labour as well as one independent councillor. Boundaries The ward was created following the Fifth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements ahead of the 2017 Scottish local elections. This was the first review after the introduction of the single transferable vote electoral system in 2007. Ardrossan And Arran (ward)
Ardrossan and Arran was one of the 10 Wards and electoral divisions of the United Kingdom, wards used to elect members of North Ayrshire Council. Created in 2007 following the Fourth Statutory Reviews of Electoral Arrangements, the ward elected three councillors using the single transferable vote electoral system. Originally a four-member ward, Ardrossan and Arran was reduced in size following a boundary review ahead of the 2017 North Ayrshire Council election, 2017 election. As a result of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018, the ward was abolished in 2022. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. North Ayrshire ( gd, Siorrachd Àir a Tuath, ) is one of 32 council areas in Scotland. The council area borders Inverclyde to the north, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire to the northeast, and East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire to the east and south respectively. The local authority is North Ayrshire Council, formed in 1997 and following similar boundaries to the district of Cunninghame. 2017 North Ayrshire Council Election
Elections to North Ayrshire Council took place on 4 May 2017 on the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. The election used the ten wards created as a result of the Fifth Statutory Review of Electoral Arrangements, with each ward electing three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system a form of proportional representation, with 33 Councillors being elected. After the election, the Labour Party took control of the authority as a minority administration with outgoing council Leader Joe Cullinane being reappointed. Ardrossan
Ardrossan (; ) is a town on the North Ayrshire coast in southwestern Scotland. The town has a population of 10,670 and forms part of a conurbation with Saltcoats and Stevenston known as the 'Three Towns'. Ardrossan is located on the east shore of the Firth of Clyde. History Ardrossan's roots can be traced to the construction of its castle 'Cannon Hill', thought to be in around 1140, by Simon de Morville. 2017 Scottish Local Elections
The 2017 Scottish local elections were held on Thursday 4 May, in all 32 local authorities. The SNP retained its position as the largest party in terms of votes and councillors, despite suffering minor losses. The Conservatives made gains and displaced Labour as the second largest party, while the Liberal Democrats suffered a net loss of councillors despite increasing their share of the vote. Minor parties and independents polled well; and independent councillors retained majority control over the three island councils. Saltcoats and Stevenston is one of the nine wards used to elect members of the North Ayrshire council. It was originally created in 2007 and elected four Councillors; as its name suggests, it covered the adjoining small towns of Saltcoats on the Firth of Clyde coast and Stevenston just inland. A national boundary review prior to the 2017 local elections saw the ward abolished in favour of two three-member wards for each town; however this was reversed after the introduction of the Islands (Scotland) Act 2018: North Ayrshire's wards were re-organised for the 2022 election with Saltcoats and Stevenston re-instated, now electing five members. Single Transferable Vote
Single transferable vote (STV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which voters cast a single vote in the form of a ranked-choice ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternate preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running. STV aims to approach proportional representation based on votes cast in the district where it is used, so that each vote is worth about the same as another. Under STV, no one party or voting bloc can take all the seats in a district unless the number of seats in the district is very small or almost all the votes cast are cast for one party's candidates (which is seldom the case).
