Arckaringa Basin
The Arckaringa Basin is an endorheic basin in Australia. It is in size and is located in South Australia. The basin surrounds the town of Coober Pedy in northern South Australia. It located in the north of the Gawler Block. Structure The basin structure features an elevated central platform. There are both glacigene sediments deposited in the upper Carboniferous and Permian coal measures which are mostly covered by Mesozoic sediments. The Boorthana Formation in the east bears diamictite. The eastern boundary of the basin contain some outcrops of pavements which prove glaciation. Infills in the Arckaringa Basin are dominated by mass flow deposits. An endorheic basin (; also spelled endoreic basin or endorreic basin) is a drainage basin that normally retains water and allows no outflow to other external bodies of water, such as rivers or oceans, but drainage converges instead into lakes or swamps, permanent or seasonal, that equilibrate through evaporation. They are also called closed or terminal basins, internal drainage systems, or simply basins. Endorheic regions contrast with exorheic regions. Endorheic water bodies include some of the largest lakes in the world, such as the Caspian Sea, the world's largest inland body of water. Basins with subsurface outflows which eventually lead to the ocean are generally not considered endorheic; they are cryptorheic. Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy () is a town in northern South Australia, north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. The town is sometimes referred to as the "opal capital of the world" because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground dwellings, called " dugouts", which are built in this fashion due to the scorching daytime heat. The name "Coober Pedy" is thought to derive from the Aboriginal term ''kupa-piti'', which means "whitefellas' hole", but in 1975 the local Aboriginal people of the town adopted the name Umoona, which means "long life" and is also their name for the mulga tree. Gawler Craton
The Gawler Craton covers approximately 440,000 square kilometres of central South Australia. Its Precambrian crystalline basement (geology), basement Crust (geology), crustal block (geology), block was cratonised ca. 1550–1450 Ma.
