Archelaos Katerinis (full name Gymnastikos Athlitikos Syllogos Archelaos Katerinis, GAS Archelaos Katerinis – el, Γυμναστικός Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Αρχέλαος Καστερίνης, ΓΑΣ Αρχέλαος Κατερίνης) is a Greek multisport club based in Katerini. The club has sport departments in various sports, but the most successful is the handball team. The handball team has won two Greek cup. History Archelaos Katerinis was founded in 1956. Initially the club had also a basketball team. This team was merged with Pierikos in 2008 and it continues as Archelaos-Pierikos B.C. The most successful team of the club is the handball team. The handball team of Archelaos was founded in 1980 and it has won 2 Greek Cups (1990, 1994) and was one time the finalist of the championship. Greek Men's Handball Championship
The Greek Men's Handball Championship, or Handball Premier, is the most important competition of Greek handball. The competition which is organised by Hellenic Handball Federation (Greek: ΟΧΕ) started in 1979–80 season. The most successful team is Ionikos Nea Filadelfeia who has won ten titles. The last title was won by Olympiacos. Evangelos Kalfarentzos, fitness director of the Panhellenic Gymnastics Association of Athens (Panellinios), physical education teacher and author, recognized as rapporteur of the sport in Greece. Competition Format The season begins with a tournament between the twelve teams. The first six teams qualify for a play-off round, while the last three plays play-out. Katerini
Katerini ( el, Κατερίνη, ''Kateríni'', ) is a city and municipality in northern Greece, the capital city of Pieria regional unit in Central Macedonia, Greece. It lies on the Pierian plain, between Mt. Olympus and the Thermaikos Gulf, at an altitude of 14 m. The municipal unit of Katerini has a population of 85,851 (according to the 2014 census) and it is the second most populous urban area at the Region of Macedonia after Thessaloniki. Pierikos
S.F.K. Pierikos ( el, Σ.Φ.Κ. Πιερικός) is a Greek football club based in Katerini, Greece, part of the major multi-sport club of the same name. Their name was inspired from the State's name of Pieria. The club recently competed in the Super League 2 2021–22, at the Northern Group and got relegated to Gamma Ethniki. History of the club The foundation The club was founded on 11 April 1961 from the merger between Megas Alexandros (meaning Alexander the Great) Katerinis and Olympos Katerinis. Megas Alexandros had played in the 1st Division of Greek football in its first season ( 1959–60) but finished in the 15th position and thus relegated in the 2nd Division. Neither Megas Alexandros nor Olympos gained promotion in the following season. Unification of the two clubs has seen as the only way for the city of Katerini to have a team in the 1st Division. The Greek Handball Cup is the second more important competition of Greek handball. The Cup is organised by the Hellenic Handball Federation (Greek: ΟΧΕ). The first Cup took place in 1982–83 season. Ionikos Nea Filadelfeia (also Ionikos Nea Philadelphia) is a sport club that is based in Nea Filadelfeia, an Athenian suburb. The full name of club is A.S. Ionikos Nea Filadelfeia (Greek: Α. Σ. Ιωνικός Νέας Φιλαδέλφειας). It was founded in 1930. The club has teams in many sports. The more successful teams are the handball and basketball teams. The colours of Ionikos are blue and white.
