Bifrost, Manitoba (rural Municipality)
The Rural Municipality of Bifrost is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on December 1, 1907. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the Village of Riverton to form the Municipality of Bifrost – Riverton. It was located in Manitoba's Interlake Region along the west shore of Lake Winnipeg. It had a population of about 2,750. Its name comes from a Scandinavian word from Norse mythology meaning "rainbow bridge connecting Asgard and Midgard" (Earth). Geography The RM of Bifrost included the communities of Morweena, Vidir and Hnausa. The independently governed Town of Arborg and the former Village of Riverton were within the boundaries of the RM of Bifrost. The RM also contains part of Manitoba's Moose Creek Provincial Forest. Arborg is a town located 103 kilometres north of Winnipeg, at the junction of Manitoba Highways 7 and 68, in the Interlake Region of Manitoba, Canada. The town is surrounded by the Municipality of Bifrost - Riverton and has a population of 1,222 as of the Canada 2016 Census. History The picturesque setting along the Icelandic River was first settled in the late 19th century. Its first postal address was Ardal (Icelandic ''Árdalur'', meaning "River Valley"), but in 1910 when the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the settlement, the name was changed to Arborg (''Árborg'', meaning "River Town"). The original railway station from 1910 still stands and is today recognized as a heritage site. The building has been converted into a public library. Icelanders established homesteads to the east, west, north, and south of the village, and by 1908 the first Polish and Ukrainian settlers had arrived in the area. The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) (french: Association canadienne des pilotes et propriétaires d'aéronefs) is a federally registered not-for-profit association that provides information and advocacy services for Canadian pilots who fly for non-commercial purposes. COPA has close to 15,000 members which ranks it as the largest aviation association of any kind in Canada. Its mission is to "Advance, promote and preserve the Canadian freedom to fly".
