Bifrost, Manitoba (rural Municipality)
The Rural Municipality of Bifrost is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on December 1, 1907. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the Village of Riverton to form the Municipality of Bifrost – Riverton. It was located in Manitoba's Interlake Region along the west shore of Lake Winnipeg. It had a population of about 2,750. Its name comes from a Scandinavian word from Norse mythology meaning "rainbow bridge connecting Asgard and Midgard" (Earth). Geography The RM of Bifrost included the communities of Morweena, Vidir and Hnausa. The independently governed Town of Arborg and the former Village of Riverton were within the boundaries of the RM of Bifrost. The RM also contains part of Manitoba's Moose Creek Provincial Forest. A rural municipality (RM) is a type of incorporated municipality in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Under the province's ''Municipal Act'' of 1997, an area must have a minimum population of 1,000 and a density of less than to incorporate as a rural municipality. Manitoba has 98 RMs, which had a cumulative population of 301,438 as of the 2016 Census. This is a decrease from 116 RMs prior to January 1, 2015, when municipalities with less than 1,000 people were directed by the provincial government to amalgamate with adjoining municipalities to comply with the ''Municipal Act''. Provincial forests are located within the Province of Manitoba, in Canada, as large areas of unpopulated and undeveloped forests. Under the Forests Act, provincial forests were developed primarily as a source of sustainable timber supply for forestry operations. Today there are 15 designated provincial forests in Manitoba, totaling almost 22,000 km2. Provincial forests are managed for diverse economic, environmental, social and cultural uses.
