Arakel Of Tabriz
Arakel Davrizhetsi or Arakel of Tabriz (; 1590s–1670) was a 17th-century Armenian historian and clergyman from Tabriz. His ''History'' is an important and reliable source for the histories of the Safavid and Ottoman empires, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia for the period 1602–1662. Background Arakel was born in Tabriz (''Davrēzh'' in Armenian) in the 1590s. He received his theological training at the seminary at Echmiadzin, the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church, where he was ordained a ''vardapet'' (celibate priest/archimandrite). In 1636 he was appointed abbot of the monastery of Hovhannavank Monastery․ He was later sent on various mission to Isfahan, Urfa, Aleppo, Jerusalem, and Athens as a nuncio of Catholicos Pilippos. Within his life he was already called "the Historian Arakel" and had a reputation of being a very competent and inquisitive person. Arakel Grigori Babakhanian ( hy, Առաքել Գրիգորի Բաբախանյան; – 14 November 1932), commonly known by his pen name Leo ( hy, Լեո), was an Armenian historian, writer, critic and professor of Yerevan State University. He is best known for authoring a multi-volume work on the history of Armenia. Arakel Mirzoyan ( hy, Առաքել Միրզոյան; born October 21, 1989) is an Armenian weightlifter. Early life Arakel Mirzoyan was born in Baghramyan, Vagharshapat, Armenian SSR. His father, Oksen Mirzoyan, was a weightlifter who won an Olympic gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, the then Head Coach of the Armenian national weightlifting team and the current Chairman of the Armenian Weightlifting Federation. Mirzoyan began following in his father's footsteps at a young age. His own weightlift career started when he lifted 20 kg weight at the age of 5. Since then, Arakel has devoted his life to weightlifting. Career Mirzoyan won various junior championships. Arabo ( hy, Արաբօ, 1863–1893), born Arakel Mkhitarian, was an Armenian fedayi of the late 19th century. Arabo was born in the village of Kurter or Korter ( or ) in the region of Sasun in the Bitlis vilayet. Arabo studied at the Arakelots Monastery school in Mush. Beginning in the late-1880s, he led the Armenian fedayi groups in Sasun and Taron. According to Armenian revolutionary Ruben Ter Minasian, Arabo and started off as a bandit whose group "terrorized the environs of the City of Moush, blocked the roads, staged holdups, killed and robbed, seized entire flocks of sheep and cattle", but became a revolutionary during his time in the Caucasus. Starting in 1889, Arabo visited the Caucasus several times. In 1892, he was arrested by Turkish authorities and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment, but escaped from prison and resumed his fedayi activities.
