The Apostolic Nunciature to South Africa the diplomatic mission of the Holy See to South Africa. It is located Pretoria. The current Apostolic Nuncio is Archbishop Peter Bryan Wells, who was named to the position by Pope Francis on 9 February 2016. The Apostolic Nunciature to the Republic of South Africa is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church in South Africa, with the rank of an embassy. The nuncio serves both as the ambassador of the Holy See to the President of South Africa, and as delegate and point-of-contact between the Catholic hierarchy in South Africa and the Pope. James Patrick Green (born 30 May 1950) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who from 2006 to 2022 served as apostolic nuncio to a variety of countries including to several Scandinavian countries from 2017 to 2022. Early years Green was born on May 30, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied for the priesthood and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on May 15, 1976. Blasco Francisco Collaço (born 16 May 1931) is an Indian prelate of the Catholic Church who spent his career in the diplomatic service of the Holy See, including 30 years as an apostolic nuncio. Biography Collaço was born in Raia, Goa, India, on 16 May 1931. He attended the Seminary of Rachol from 1941 to 1953. He was ordained a priest on 2 May 1954. Studying from 1954 to 1957 at Rome's Pontifical Urban University, he earned a doctorate in canon law. He spent the next year at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. Manuel Monteiro de Castro (born 29 March 1938) is a Portuguese prelate of the Catholic Church who worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1967 to 2009, with the rank of archbishop and the title of nuncio from 1985. Edward Idris Cassidy AC (5 July 1924 – 10 April 2021) was an Australian prelate of the Catholic Church who was president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity from 1989 to 2001.
