Antsirabe Nord
Antsirabe Nord or Antsirabe Avaratra is a rural municipality in northern Madagascar. It belongs to the district of Vohemar, which is a part of Sava Region. The population of the commune was estimated to be approximately 25,000 in 2001 commune census. Primary and junior level secondary education are available. The majority 99% of the population of the commune are farmers. The most important crop is vanilla, while other important products are coffee, pepper and rice. Services provide employment for 1% of the population. Vanilla
Vanilla is a spice derived from orchids of the genus ''Vanilla (genus), Vanilla'', primarily obtained from pods of the Mexican species, flat-leaved vanilla (''Vanilla planifolia, V. planifolia''). Pollination is required to make the plants produce the fruit from which the vanilla spice is obtained. In 1837, Belgian botanist Charles François Antoine Morren discovered this fact and pioneered a method of artificially pollinating the plant. The method proved financially unworkable and was not deployed commercially. In 1841, Edmond Albius, a 12-year-old enslaved child who lived on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, discovered that the plant could be hand-pollination, hand-pollinated. Vohemar
Vohemar ( mg, Vohimarina or ''Iharan̈a'' ) is a coastal city and commune ( mg, firaisana) in northern Madagascar. It belongs to the district of Iharana, which is a part of Sava Region. The population of the commune was estimated to be approximately 15,000 in 2001 commune census. In addition to primary schooling the town offers secondary education at both junior and senior levels. The town provides access to hospital services to its citizens. From the late medieval period, Northern Madagascar had a number of small and large trading towns ruled by Swahili merchants. Sava Region
Sava is a region in northern Madagascar. Its capital is Sambava. Until 2009 Sava belonged to Antsiranana Province. The region is situated at the northern part of the east coast of Madagascar. It is bordered by the region Diana to the north, Sofia to the west, and Analanjirofo to the south. As of 2018, its population was 1,123,013 and the total area is . Shuttle Radar Topography Mission
The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) is an international research effort that obtained digital elevation models on a near-global scale from 56°S to 60°N, to generate the most complete high-resolution digital topographic database of Earth prior to the release of the ASTER GDEM in 2009. SRTM consisted of a specially modified radar system that flew on board the Space Shuttle Endeavour during the 11-day STS-99 mission in February 2000. The radar system was based on the older '' Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar'' (SIR-C/X-SAR), previously used on the Shuttle in 1994.
