Antonio Maceo Brigade
The Antonio Maceo Brigade was a political organization in the mid 1970s composed of Cuban Americans that demanded the right of Cuban exiles to travel to Cuba and to establish good relations with the Cuban government. The group was mainly composed of young Cuban Americans that had developed leftist sympathies from experiences in the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement, and were generally critical of anti-Castro rhetoric. The group was invited to Cuba personally by Fidel Castro. The visit brought a brief period of warmer Cuba-United States relations and brought attention to the Cuban-American left. Antonio Maceo Grajales
Lt. General José Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales (June 14, 1845December 7, 1896) was second-in-command of the Cuban Army of Independence. Fellow Cubans gave Maceo the nickname “The Bronze Titan" ( es, El Titán de Bronce, links=no), nickname that he earned after being wounded several times in battle. Spaniards referred to Maceo as the "Greater Lion" (''El León mayor''). Maceo was one of the most noteworthy guerrilla leaders in 19th century Latin America, comparable to José Antonio Páez of Venezuela in military acumen. Early years Maceo was the son of a Venezuelan farmer and dealer in agricultural products, , and a mulatto Cuban woman of Dominican descent, Mariana Grajales y Cuello. Carlos Muñiz Varela
Carlos Muñiz Varela (August 10, 1953 – April 28, 1979) was a Cuban resident of Puerto Rico who was murdered under suspicious circumstances in 1979. Muñiz Varela was an outspoken backer of the Puerto Rican independence movements. Biography Muñiz Varela was born in Cuba. When he was nine years old, he moved from Cuba together with his mother and sister to live in Puerto Rico. Muñiz Varela received his primary and secondary education in Puerto Rico and in 1973, he formed the Movimiento Socialista Popular, a university students pro-independence group. In 1974, Muñiz Varela joined the staff of '' Areito'' magazine, a pro-Puerto Rican independence publication. CubaOne Foundation, also known as CubaOne, is a Miami-based not-for-profit organization that sponsors free 7-day trips to Cuba for young Cuban Americans ages 22–35. It was founded by Daniel Jimenez, Giancarlo Sopo, Cherie Cancio, and Andrew Jimenez. History CubaOne Foundation was launched in 2016. It is modeled loosely after Birthright Israel, the Jewish organization that offers young Jews free trips to Israel. Lourdes Casal
Lourdes Casal (April 5, 1938 – February 1, 1981) was an important poet and activist for the Cuban community. She was internationally known for her contributions to psychology, writing, and Cuban politics. Born and raised in Cuba, she sought exile in New York because of Cuban communist rule. Casal received a master's degree in psychology in 1962 and later, a doctorate in 1975 from the New School for Social Research. She wrote the book ''El caso Padilla: literatura y revolucion en Cuba,'' which illustrated the failing relationship between writers and Cuban officials. A year later, she co-founded a journal named ''Nueva Generation'' which focused on creating dialogue on relationships between Cubans living abroad and on the island.
