Anton Van Hooff
Antonius Jacobus Leonardus (Anton) van Hooff (born 1943) is a Dutch historian of antiquity, author and a former docent. From 2009 until 2015, he chaired the freethinkers association De Vrije Gedachte. In 1971, Van Hooff graduated with the dissertation ''Pax romana: een studie van het Romeinse imperialisme'' ("Pax Romana: a Study of Roman Imperialism"). Until 2008, Van Hooff was docent in ancient history at the Radboud University Nijmegen. He specialises in classical antiquity, and regularly publishes in various newspapers and magazines. He wrote several books, including ''Nero & Seneca'', ''Athene'' ("Athens") and ''Marcus Aurelius''. Van Hooff is an atheist, a republican and a member of the Republican Society. The Republican Society (Dutch: ''Republikeins Genootschap'') is a Dutch republican movement, founded on 11 September 1996 in the Prinsenhof in Delft, at the initiative of Pierre Vinken. Its aim is to abolish the monarchy of the Netherlands. Founders and goal According to the Republican Society's website, there are fourteen founders: The idea was to start with fifteen members, and two absent people –Harry Mulisch and Schuitemaker– would be marked as co-founders ''in absentia''. However, Mulisch withdrew and thus brought the number to fourteen. An academy (Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). De Balie
De Balie is a Dutch organization that produces independent journalistic programs about art, culture and politics. De Balie is located at Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen 10, near Leidseplein in Amsterdam. History When the 19th century building of the Amsterdam Cantonal Court was threatened to be demolished in order to build an eight-storey Bouweshotel in the late 1970s, Amsterdammers, including politician Hedy d'Ancona and artist Wim T. Schippers, launched the campaign "Bouw es wat anders" to prevent this from happening. The city council was persuaded, and a good destination for the building was found in art center De Balie in 1982. Rottenberg led the organization together with Paul Hermanides and, in the mid-1980s, ordered the conversion of the courthouse into a theatre complex. Republiek is a Dutch republican pressure group advocating the replacement of the Dutch Monarchy with a ''de facto'' parliamentary republic, founded in January 1998 in Amsterdam by Ewout Irrgang and Elisabeth van der Steenhoven, under the previous name Nieuw Republikeins Genootschap (NRG). It is a member organisation of the Alliance of European Republican Movements and is currently the largest organisation solely campaigning for a republican constitution for The Netherlands.
