Antoine-Marie-Benoît Besson
Antoine-Marie-Benoit Besson (September 14, 1876 – July 23, 1969) was a French military officer. Pomeys
Pomeys is a commune in the Rhône department in eastern France. History The legend traces the origins of the parish of St Martin de Pomeys (village name) to the life of the great apostle of the French countryside: St. Martin. Returning from his homeland of Hungary, the bishop of Tours would have stopped at the inexhaustible fountain known as the "fountain St Martin". He would have left there, engraved on the stone, the mark with his stick. This fountain is located on the "raitchemin de St Martin" on the way to the bois de Pomeys. Maginot Line
The Maginot Line (; ), named after the Minister of War (France), French Minister of War André Maginot, is a line of concrete fortifications, obstacles and weapon installations built by French Third Republic, France in the 1930s to deter invasion by Nazi Germany and force them to move around the fortifications. It was impervious to most forms of attack; consequently, the Germans invaded through the Low Countries in 1940, passing it to the north. The line, which was supposed to be fully extended further towards the west to avoid such an occurrence, was finally scaled back in response to demands from Belgium. Indeed, Belgium feared it would be sacrificed in the event of another German invasion. The line has since become a metaphor for expensive efforts that offer a false sense of security. Rhine
The Rhine ( ) is one of the List of rivers of Europe, major rivers in Europe. The river begins in the Swiss canton of Graubünden in the southeastern Swiss Alps. It forms part of the Swiss-Liechtenstein border, then part of the Austria–Switzerland border, Swiss-Austrian border. From Lake Constance downstream, it forms part of the Germany-Switzerland border, Swiss-German border. After that the Rhine defines much of the Franco-German border. It then flows in a mostly northerly direction through the German Rhineland. Finally, the Rhine turns to flow predominantly west to enter the Netherlands, eventually emptying into the North Sea. Army Group 3 ( 3 A 3 was a French Army formation during the Second World War, stationed along the river Rhine manning the Maginot line. It was responsible for manning the southern end of the Maginot Line, along the River Rhine and controlled one army. The army group's Commander-in-Chief was Antoine-Marie-Benoit Besson.
