Anthony I, Eritrean Patriarch
Abune Antonios (; 12 July 1927 – 9 February 2022) was the third Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. He was illegally and forcefully deposed by the Eritrean government in 2006, and was placed under house arrest thereafter. Ecclesiastical career Antonios was born on 12 July 1927 in the town of Hembrti, north of Asmara in the province of Hamasien. He was ordained priest in 1942, and later elected Abbot in 1955. When the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church sought autocephaly, he was one of five abbots of monasteries that went to Egypt to be ordained as bishops so that the church would have its own Holy Synod. He was ordained as Bishop Antonios of Hamasien-Asmara on 19 June 1994 in Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral, Cairo, by Shenouda III, Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. Abuna
Abuna (or Abune, which is the Construct state, status constructus form used when a name follows: Ge'ez alphabet, Ge'ez አቡነ ''abuna''/''abune'', 'our father'; Amharic language, Amharic and Tigrinya language, Tigrinya) is the honorific title used for any bishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church as well as of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. It was historically used solely for the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Ethiopia during the more than 1000 years when the List of Coptic Orthodox Popes of Alexandria, Coptic Patriarchate of Alexandria appointed only one bishop at a time to serve its Ethiopian flock. The Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church ( cop, Ⲡⲁⲡⲁ, translit=Papa; ar, البابا, translit=al-Bābā), also known as the Bishop of Alexandria, is the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, with ancient Christian roots in Egypt. The current holder of this position is Pope Tawadros II, who was selected as the 118th pope on November 18, 2012. Fikremariam Hagos Tsalim (born 23 October 1970) is an Ethiopia-born prelate of the Eritrean Catholic Church who has been bishop of the Eparchy of Segheneity since 2012. He was imprisoned without trial in 2022 from 15 October and released after 75 days. Early life and education Fikremariam Hagos Tsalim was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 23 October 1970 to Hagos Tsalim and Birikti Abebe Woldemichael. He was baptized on 21 November by Cardinal Paulos Tzadua. He studied philosophy at the Major Seminary of Adigrat and theology at the Asmara Theological Institute. Career Tsalim was ordained a priest on 21 July 1996 by Zekarias Yohannes. He was a parish priest in Sembel on the outskirts of Asmara while also serving as secretary and bursar of the bishop's residence.
