Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition
The sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (''Den norske antarktisekspedisjonen'') was a scientific expedition to Queen Maud Land in Antarctica. The expedition was based at Norway Station () which was located on the Fimbul Ice Shelf bordering the coast of Queen Maud Land. The expedition carried out survey work and scientific studies over a period of three-four years (1956–1960). The expedition was intended as part of Norway's participation in the International Geophysical Year, 1957-58. The crew set sail from Oslo on board two whaling ships, the ''Polarsirkel'' and ''Polarbjørn'', on 10 November 1956. The expedition was led by Sigurd Gunnarson Helle, a geodesist at Norsk Polarinstitutt. It included a total crew of fourteen researchers which was reduced to nine during the third year. Maudheim Medal
The Maudheim medal (''Maudheimmedaljen'') was instituted by King Haakon VII of Norway on 14 November 1951 in honor of the members of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1949–1952, awarded to the participants of the expedition. This expedition was the first to Antarctica involving an international team of scientists. During the expedition, a base known as Maudheim was established on the Quar Ice Shelf along the coast of Queen Maud Land in February 1950. The medal itself is the same as the King's Medal of Merit in Silver with the addition of a silver buckle on the ribbon with the inscription "MAUDHEIM 1949-1952". Only 18 people were awarded with the Maudheim Medal. King's Medal Of Merit
The King's Medal of Merit (Norwegian: ''Kongens fortjenstmedalje'') is a Norwegian award. It was instituted in 1908 to reward meritorious achievements in the fields of art, science, business, and public service. It is divided in two classes: gold and silver. The medal in gold is rewarded for extraordinary achievements of importance to the nation and society. The medal in silver may be awarded for lesser achievements. The medal is suspended from a ribbon in the colours of the Royal Standard of Norway. The medal in gold is ranked eighth in the ranking of Norwegian orders and medals. King Olav V
Olav V (; born Prince Alexander of Denmark; 2 July 1903 – 17 January 1991) was the King of Norway from 1957 until his death in 1991. Olav was the only child of King Haakon VII of Norway and Maud of Wales. He became heir apparent to the Norwegian throne when his father was elected King of Norway in 1905. He was the first heir to the Norwegian throne to be brought up in Norway since Olav IV in the fourteenth century, and his parents made sure he was given as Norwegian an upbringing as possible. In preparation for his future role, he attended both civilian and military schools. In 1929, he married his first cousin Princess Märtha of Sweden. During World War II his leadership was much appreciated and he was appointed Norwegian Chief of Defence in 1944. Olav became king following the death of his father in 1957. Sigurd Gunnarson Helle
Sigurd Gunnarson Helle (6 September 1920 – 21 April 2013) was a Norwegian topographer and explorer. He was born in Hylestad. He graduated from the University of Oslo with the cand.mag. degree in 1948. He was a research assistant for Carl Størmer, and was hired as a geodesist at the Norwegian Polar Institute in 1949. He did field work at Jan Mayen and Svalbard, but is best known for leading the Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition to Queen Maud Land in 1956–1960. He retired in 1987.
