Annunciation (El Greco, Madrid)
''Annunciation'' is a 1609 work by El Greco, now in a private collection in Madrid. It is a variant on his work on the same theme as part of the Doña María de Aragón Altarpiece. The painter died in April 1614 and the work may have been completed by his son Jorge Manuel after that date. It is not an independent composition but a cut-down fragment of the whole, designed for and installed in the chapel of the Hospital de Tavera.Catalog nr. 173, in Tiziana Feti's catalog of El Greco paintings, 1969 File:Los tres Retablos del Hospital Tavera, en Toledo.jpg, Old photo of chapel interior File:El Greco - Annunciation reconstruction, Hospital de Tavera.jpg, Annunciation reconstruction with Concert of Angels File:Anunciacion Prado(2).jpg, Prado version of the Annunciation File:El Greco, The Vision of Saint John (1608-1614).jpg, Vision of St John (also cut down, upper portion unknown) File:Image-El Bautismo de Cristo El Greco version1609.jpg, Baptism of Christ (still in Toledo) Refer ...

El Greco
Domḗnikos Theotokópoulos ( el, Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος ; 1 October 1541 7 April 1614), most widely known as El Greco ("The Greek"), was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. "El Greco" was a nickname, and the artist normally signed his paintings with his full birth name in Greek letters, (), often adding the word (), which means Cretan. El Greco was born in the Kingdom of Candia (modern Crete), which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, Italy, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done.J. Brown, ''El Greco of Toledo'', 75–77 In 1570, he moved to Rome, where he opened a workshop and executed a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance taken from a number of great artists of the time, notably Tinto ...

Doña María De Aragón Altarpiece
The Doña María de Aragón Altarpiece was an altarpiece painted between 1596 and 1599 by El Greco for the chapel of the Colegio de la Encarnación (also known as the Colegio de doña María de Aragón) in Madrid. The college was secularised during Goya's lifetime and the altarpiece was dismantled. There has been much speculation over which paintings belonged to the work. The consensus view is that it consisted of six large canvases and a seventh, now lost. Five of those six canvases are now in the Prado and the sixth is in the National Museum of Art of Romania in Bucharest. He was the only son of the iconic painter, Doménikos Theotokópoulos, called "El Greco". Biography He learned his trade working in the studios of his father. Around 1603, he participated in creating custom altarpieces in Illescas; his first documented work. Later, in 1607, he began to work more independently, producing an altarpiece in Titulcia which, although generally done in his father's style, showed a glimmer of his own personality.Brief biography

Hospital De Tavera
The Hospital de Tavera, also known as the Hospital de San Juan Bautista, Hospital de afuera, or simply as Hospital Tavera, is an important building of Renaissance architecture located is in the Spanish city of Toledo. It was built between 1541 and 1603 by order of the Cardinal Tavera. This hospital is dedicated to John the Baptist and also served as pantheon for its patron, Cardinal Tavera. Initially it began to be constructed under the supervision of Alonso de Covarrubias, being succeeded by other architects, with Bartolomé Bustamante finishing the work. The remoteness with the old part of the city made it known as ''el hospital de afuera'', since within the walls there already existed the Hospital de Santa Cruz. Currently the building remains the property of the House of Medinaceli and inside it is the Museo Fundación Lerma, which houses part of the artistic collections of this lineage, as well as the Section of the Nobility of the National Historic Archive. Concert Of Angels
''Concert of Angels'' is a work of El Greco in oil on canvas from 1608, during his last period in Toledo, Spain. It is exhibited at the National Gallery in Athens. Created at the end of his life, art historians have disputed whether this painting is a finished work or part of a working study for a commission of the ''Annunciation'' for the chapel of the Hospital de Tavera. It is not an independent composition but a cut-down fragment of the whole. It shows a celestial choir of angels, some of them with their backs to the viewer.Entry

Opening Of The Fifth Seal
The ''Opening of the Fifth Seal'' (or ''The Fifth Seal of the Apocalypse'' or ''The Vision of Saint John'') was painted in the last years of El Greco, El Greco's life for a side-altar of the church of Saint John the Baptist outside the walls of Toledo, Spain, Toledo. Before 1908, El Greco's painting had been referred to as ''Profane Love''. The scholar Manuel B. Cossio had doubts about the title and suggested the ''Opening of the Fifth Seal''. The Metropolitan Museum, where the painting is kept, comments: "the picture is unfinished and much damaged and abraded." Subject of the painting The painting's subject is taken from the Book of Revelation , where the souls of martyrs cry out to God for justice upon their persecutors on Earth. The ecstatic figure of St. John dominates the canvas, while behind him naked souls writhe in a chaotic storm of emotion as they receive white robes of salvation. The upper portion of the painting was destroyed in 1880. It is believed that the lost porti ...

Baptism Of Christ (El Greco, Toledo)
''Baptism of Christ'' is a 1608–1614 painting by El Greco, made towards the end of his life in Toledo and completed by his son Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli. It is now in the Hospital de Tavera in Toledo. Description The work was produced almost entirely by Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli, El Greco's son. Jesus appears kneeling while Saint John the Baptist at right pours water onto his head from a conch. In the upper, God the Father and the dove of the Holy Spirit are painted to unite the figures of the Holy Trinity. The strong lighting recalls the work of Michelangelo. This large canvas was delivered to the Tavera Hospital shortly before 1624, the date on which it was already included in the inventory of this institution. It is likely that it was designed to be placed in the main altarpiece, in the central niche of the lower floor, which has the appropriate measurements. However, the Tabernacle of the Tavera Hospital would have made it difficult to contemplate. It was then placed in ...

Paintings Of The Annunciation
Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the "matrix" or "support"). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. In art, the term ''painting ''describes both the act and the result of the action (the final work is called "a painting"). The support for paintings includes such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, pottery, leaf, copper and concrete, and the painting may incorporate multiple other materials, including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf, and even whole objects. Painting is an important form in the visual arts, bringing in elements such as drawing, composition, gesture (as in gestural painting), narration (as in narrative art), and abstraction (as in abstract art). Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in still life and landscape painting), photographic, abstract, nar ...
