Anita Anand
Anita Anand (born May 20, 1967) is a Canadian lawyer and politician who serves as the minister of national defence since 2021. She has represented the riding of Oakville in the House of Commons since the 2019 federal election, sitting as a member of the Liberal Party. During the 43rd Parliament of Canada, she served as Minister of Public Services and Procurement and oversaw Canada's procurement of vaccines and personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is the first Hindu to become a federal minister in Canada. Early life and education Indira Anita Anand was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia. Kentville is an incorporated town in Nova Scotia. It is the most populous town in the Annapolis Valley. As of 2021, the town's population was 6,630. Its census agglomeration is 26,929. History Kentville owes its location to the Cornwallis River which, downstream from Kentville, becomes a large tidal river at the Minas Basin. The riverbank at the current location of Kentville provided an easy fording point. The Mi'kmaq name for the location was "Penooek".
