Andy Sullivan (golfer)
Andrew Michael Sullivan (born 19 May 1987) is an English professional golfer who currently plays on the European Tour. Amateur career Sullivan had a successful amateur career before turning professional. He won the individual title in the Tailhade Cup in Argentina in 2010, and won the 2011 New South Wales Medal in Australia. Sullivan's biggest win as an amateur came at the 2011 Scottish Amateur Stroke Play Championship. In 2011, Sullivan represented the winning Great Britain and Ireland team at the 2011 Walker Cup, where he lost 3&2 to Jordan Spieth in the singles. Professional career Sullivan turned professional in 2011; in that year he played four European Tour events before entering the 2011 qualifying school where he obtained the tour card with a 3rd-place finish. The Dutch Open is an annual golf tournament played in the Netherlands, and has been part of the European Tour's schedule since the Tour was inaugurated in 1972. History and sponsorship Founded in 1912, the tournament began as the Dutch Open, before a variety of sponsors resulted in numerous name changes over the years. Since 1997 it has also been co-sanctioned by the European Tour. The championship was initially contested over just 36 holes until 1908, when it was extended to become a 72-hole tournament. Wallie Coetsee
Wallie Coetsee (born 11 July 1972) is a South African professional golfer. Wallie was encouraged to take up the game of golf by his father, Ockert, a tomato farmer in Tzaneen. He played very little competitive golf as an amateur and won only a few small tournaments. Upon turning professional in 1992, he struggled to make an impression on the Tour. He convinced his father to allow him three more years on the Tour, and promised that if he didn't make it he would join him working on the family farm. He improved slightly and again begged his father for another year. The result was his maiden professional victory in the 1997 FNB Namibia Open - a win which sparked off one of his most successful years on the Tour. Finishing 11th in the SA Open in 1999. The 2015 European Tour is the seventh edition of the Race to Dubai and the 44th season of golf tournaments since the European Tour officially began in 1972. Ian Woosnam
Ian Harold Woosnam (born 2 March 1958) is a Welsh professional golfer. Nicknamed 'Woosie', Woosnam was one of the "Big Five" generation of European golfers, all born within 12 months of one another, all of whom have won majors, and made Europe competitive in the Ryder Cup. His peers in this group were Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, and Sandy Lyle. Woosnam's major championship win was at the 1991 Masters Tournament. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017. Early life Woosnam was born in the town of Oswestry, Shropshire in England, and his family lived in the nearby village of St Martin's in Shropshire. David Llewellyn (golfer)
David John Llewellyn (born 18 November 1951) is a Welsh professional golfer. Llewellyn played on the European Tour in the 1970s after being named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year in 1971. He achieved a personal best ranking of 39th on the Order or Merit in 1974, but did not win any tournaments in this period. After a spell as a club professional at Craythorne Golf Centre (1975–78), Royal Malta Golf Club (1978–81) and Thirsk and Northallerton Golf Club (1982–84), he returned to tournament golf in 1984, and collected several tournament victories during the following years. His sole win on the main European Tour was the 1988 AGF Biarritz Open, when he set a tour record four round total of 258. 2020 European Tour
The 2020 European Tour was the 49th season of golf tournaments since the European Tour officially began in 1972 and the 12th edition of the Race to Dubai. The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on the season, with many tournaments being rescheduled or cancelled. All four major championships were affected; The Open Championship was cancelled, and the Masters Tournament, U.S. Open and PGA Championship were moved to dates much later in the year. English Championship (golf)
The English Championship was a professional golf tournament held 6–9 August 2020 at Hanbury Manor Golf Club in Thundridge, near Ware, Hertfordshire, England. The tournament was intended to be a one-off event and was the third leg of a six-week "UK swing" on the European Tour during the 2020 season. The UK swing was created as part of sweeping changes to the tour's schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the tournament, American John Catlin became the first player to be withdrawn from a tournament due to violating the tour's health measures. Andy Sullivan won the tournament and achieved a new European Tour scoring record at the time, with an aggregate of 257 over 72 holes, beating the old record of 258, shared by David Llewellyn and Ian Woosnam, who achieved their records in 1988 and 1990 respectively. 2016 Ryder Cup
The 41st Ryder Cup Matches were held in the United States from September 30 to October 2, 2016, at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, a suburb southwest of Minneapolis. Europe entered the competition as the cup holders, having won in 2014 in Scotland for their third consecutive win. The United States won for the first time since 2008 at Valhalla, and featured the most lopsided American victory since a 9-point win in 1981 at Walton Heath. Official World Golf Ranking
The Official World Golf Ranking is a system for rating the performance level of professional golfers. It was started in 1986. The rankings are based on a player's position in individual tournaments (i.e. not pairs or team events) over a "rolling" two-year period. New rankings are calculated each week. During 2018, nearly 400 tournaments on 20 tours were covered by the ranking system. All players competing in these tournaments are included in the rankings. In 2022, 23 tours factored into the world rankings. As well as being of general interest, the rankings have an additional importance, in that they are used as one of the qualifying criteria for entry into a number of leading tournaments.
