André Burthe
André Burthe d'Annelet de Rosenthal (1772–1830) was a Baron of France. Biography André Burthe was born in Metz in France on 8 December 1772, allegedly into a family of Irish refugees who had followed James II of England, James II of England to France. However his father Nicolas Burthe was a descendant of a line of merchants in Metz, so it is unclear where this allegation arises. His father married Françoise d'Annelet in the parish of St Eucaire in Metz on 29 October 1771: according to Laussat Nicolas was an ex-soldier who had joined a manufacturing enterprise in Metz, and the young André studied under a parish priest in Lorraine. He entered military service on 6 April 1791 at the age of 19 as a simple cavalier in the Second Regiment of Dragoons, after which his career had a meteoric rise. He served in the Armée du Nord 1792-4 during the French Revolution. Burthe fought with distinction at the Battle of Neerwinden (1793), after which he was made provisional second lieut ...

Dominique François Burthe
Dominique François Burthe (1785–1852), was born in Metz, France in 1785, son of the merchant Louis Burthe and Maria Gaudres. He entered military service and travelled to Louisiana in the company of his older cousin André Burthe on the ship taking the Prefect Laussat to arrange the transfer of the colony from Spain to France prior to the Louisiana Purchase. According to Blanque, Dominique François was bearer of a letter from the Ministry of War stating that he was to take up the position of Sous-Lieutenant in the 54th Infantry, one of the regiments to be sent to Louisiana. The letter gave him orders to join his regiment at Batavie, where they were stationed, but the elder Burthe found it more convenient to have his cousin embark on the Surveillent: Blanque suggests that he was never properly appointed to officer status. While in Louisiana the two Burthes met and married the two daughters of the widow Delord-Sarpy. Dominique François married Louise Delord Sarpy (1789–1848) i ...

Médaille De Sainte-Hélène
The Saint Helena Medal (french: Médaille de Sainte-Hélène) was the first French campaign medal. It was established in 1857 by a decree of emperor Napoleon III to recognise participation in the campaigns led by emperor Napoleon I. Emperor Napoléon I, creator of the Order of the Legion of Honour and various other orders, never instituted commemorative campaign medals for his soldiers. In time, many veterans of these campaigns, sometimes called the "débris de la Grande Armée" ( en, "remnants of the Great Army"), began meeting within various new veterans' associations. Keeping alive their war memories and the myth of Napoléon in popular culture, they issued many unofficial commemorative and associative medals. It would be forty two years after the last battles and exile of the emperor to the island of Saint Helena before the need to adequately and officially recognise the service of these combat veterans was eventually recognised officially by an imperial decree of Em ...

Noisy-le-Grand
Noisy-le-Grand () is a commune in the eastern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located from the centre of Paris. The commune of Noisy-le-Grand is part of the sector of Porte de Paris, one of the four sectors of the "new town" of Marne-la-Vallée. Some of the postmodern architecture in the commune has been used as a shooting location in movies including ''Brazil'' and ''The Hunger Games''. Name The name Noisy comes from Medieval Latin ''nucetum'', meaning "walnut grove", after the walnut trees () covering the territory of Noisy-le-Grand in ancient times. The epithet "le-Grand" (Medieval Latin: ''Magnum''), meaning "the Great", was added in the Middle Ages, probably to distinguish Noisy-le-Grand from the smaller settlement of Noisy-le-Sec, which was sometimes referred to as ''Nucenum Minus'' ("Noisy the Small"). Demographics Like a lot of other Seine-Saint-Denis cities, the commune is very cosmopolitan, home of many communities, with a lot of its locals coming from various cont ...

Bourbon Restoration In France
The Bourbon Restoration was the period of French history during which the House of Bourbon returned to power after the first fall of Napoleon on 3 May 1814. Briefly interrupted by the Hundred Days War in 1815, the Restoration lasted until the July Revolution of 26 July 1830. Louis XVIII and Charles X, brothers of the executed king Louis XVI, successively mounted the throne and instituted a conservative government intended to restore the proprieties, if not all the institutions, of the Ancien Régime. Exiled supporters of the monarchy returned to France but were unable to reverse most of the changes made by the French Revolution. Exhausted by decades of war, the nation experienced a period of internal and external peace, stable economic prosperity and the preliminaries of industrialization. Background Following the French Revolution (1789–1799), Napoleon Bonaparte became ruler of France. After years of expansion of his French Empire by successive military victories, a coaliti ...

Siege Of Lérida (1810)
In the Siege of Lérida from 29 April to 13 May 1810, an Imperial French army under Louis Gabriel Suchet besieged a Spanish garrison led by Jaime García Conde. On 13 May, García Conde surrendered with his 7,000 surviving soldiers. Lleida (Lérida) is a city in the western part of Catalonia. Margalef is located on Route N-240 about southeast of Lérida. The siege occurred during the Peninsular War, part of the Napoleonic Wars. After a fruitless attempt to seize Valencia in March, Suchet determined to move against Lérida. By mid-April, the French were before the city. Suchet heard that a Spanish army commanded by Henry O'Donnell was trying to interfere with the planned operation. O'Donnell's column was intercepted and in the Battle of Margalef on 23 April, it was routed with heavy losses. This action was followed by a siege in which Suchet used brutal methods to bring a speedy surrender. On 13 May, García Conde capitulated with his 7,000 surviving soldiers. This event ...

Battle Of Friedland
The Battle of Friedland (14 June 1807) was a major engagement of the Napoleonic Wars between the armies of the French Empire commanded by Napoleon I and the armies of the Russian Empire led by Count von Bennigsen. Napoleon and the French obtained a decisive victory that routed much of the Russian army, which retreated chaotically over the Alle River by the end of the fighting. The battlefield is located in modern-day Kaliningrad Oblast, near the town of Pravdinsk, Russia. The engagement at Friedland was a strategic necessity after the Battle of Eylau earlier in 1807 had failed to yield a decisive verdict for either side. The battle began when Bennigsen noticed the seemingly isolated reserve corps of Marshal Lannes at the town of Friedland. Bennigsen, who planned only to secure his march northward to Wehlau and never intended to risk an engagement against Napoleon's numerically-superior forces, thought he had a good chance of destroying these isolated French units before Nap ...
