Andrew Smeaton was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1926 to 1935 sitting with the Dominion Labor caucus in opposition. Political career Smeaton ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1926 Alberta general election as a candidate under the Dominion Labor banner. He defeated two other candidates on the second count to pick up the vacant district for his party. Smeaton ran for a second term in office in the 1930 Alberta general election. Berwickshire ( gd, Siorrachd Bhearaig) is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area in south-eastern Scotland, on the English border. Berwickshire County Council existed from 1890 until 1975, when the area became part of the Borders region, with most of the historic county becoming part of the lower-tier Berwickshire district. John Smith Stewart
John Smith Stewart, (18 May 1878 – 14 August 1970) was a Canadian politician and brigadier-general from Alberta. Early life John Smith Stewart was born 16 May 1878 in the Brampton, Ontario, to John Stewart and Mary Armstrong. Stewart moved to Edmonton at the age of 19 in 1896. Stewart later studied dentistry at University of Toronto, completing his studies in 1903. He moved to Lethbridge and married Jean McClure on 25 September 1907; she died in 1914. Stewart was appointed to the board of the newly established University of Alberta in 1909. Military career Stewart's military career began as a private in Strathcona's Horse during the Second Boer War. Hans Enoch Wight was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1935 to 1937 sitting with the Social Credit caucus in government. Political career Wight ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature as a Social Credit candidate in the electoral district of Lethbridge in the 1935 Alberta general election. He defeated incumbent Andrew Smeaton and two other candidates with a landslide majority to pick up the seat for his party. Dominion Labor Party (Alberta)
The Dominion Labor Party (Alberta) was a minor political party. It was founded on June 11, 1918 when Edmonton's Labour Representation League renamed itself the Alberta wing of the DLP. Its executive included Mr. Marshall, Mr. Mercer, Mr. Dan Knott, later mayor of the city, White (later Labour MLA), Findlay and Farmilo (both later to be aldermen), and Elmer Roper, later mayor Edmonton. A branch of the DLP was founded in Calgary in March 1919 as the Federated Labor Party and was renamed the Dominion Labor Party that same year. The 1926 Alberta general election was held on June 28, 1926, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The United Farmers of Alberta government that had first been elected in 1921 was re-elected, taking a majority of the seats in the Alberta Legislature. Herbert Greenfield had resigned as United Farmers leader and premier, and John E. Brownlee led the UFA to this second election victory, increasing the UFA's number of seats. Robert Barrowman
Robert Barrowman (December 24, 1881 – February 18, 1947) was a politician and artist in Alberta, Canada. Born outside Glasgow, Scotland, Barrowman showed talent as an artist from an early age drawing sketches of the countryside but was employed in his youth as a shipbuilder for Clyde Shipping Company. Barrowman emigrated to Canada in 1907, and settled first in Toronto where he worked for the Blue Ribbon Tea Company and then in Peterborough, Ontario where he worked for a sign painting company. In 1910, he settled in Lethbridge, Alberta where he founded City Sign Works and Lethbridge Posting Company and became a prominent local businessman. He was elected to city council in 1924, becoming mayor of Letbridge in 1928 and served in that position until 1934. 1935 Alberta General Election
The 1935 Alberta general election was held on August 22, 1935, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The newly founded Social Credit Party of Alberta won a sweeping victory, unseating the 14-year government of the United Farmers of Alberta. It was one of only five times that Alberta has changed governments. Premier John E. Brownlee had resigned on July 10, 1934, when he was sued and found liable for the seduction of a young clerk working in the Attorney-General's office. Although the verdict was immediately set aside by the presiding judge, the scandal seriously damaged the UFA's reputation among socially conservative Albertans. Provincial Treasurer Richard G. Reid succeeded him, but was unable to change the party's fortunes.
