Andrew Campbell (born 1875) was an American Negro leagues catcher for several years before the founding of the first Negro National League. He was born in Texas. Catcher
Catcher is a Baseball positions, position in baseball and softball. When a Batter (baseball), batter takes their at bat, turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home plate, home) Umpire (baseball), umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. In addition to this primary duty, the catcher is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field the position well. The role of the catcher is similar to that of the wicket-keeper in cricket. Positioned behind home plate and facing toward the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field, and is therefore in the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. Bill Gatewood
William Miller "Big Bill" Gatewood (August 22, 1881 – December 8, 1962) was an American Negro league baseball pitcher and manager for several years before the founding of the first Negro National League, and in its first few seasons. He pitched for the Leland Giants, Chicago Giants, St. Paul Colored Gophers, Chicago American Giants, New York Lincoln Giants, Cuban X-Giants, Philadelphia Giants, Brooklyn Royal Giants, St. Louis Giants, Indianapolis ABCs, Detroit Stars, St. Louis Stars, Toledo Tigers, Milwaukee Bears, Memphis Red Sox, Atlantic City Bacharach Giants, and Birmingham Black Barons. Joe Green (baseball, Born 1878)
Charles Albert "Joe" Green (July 26, 1878 – September 18, 1962) was an American baseball outfielder and manager in the pre-Negro leagues and the beginning of the Negro National League. Green began his baseball career with the Chicago Clippers in 1900. In 1903, he played for the Columbia Giants, then the Chicago Union Giants, the Leland Giants, then spent most of the rest of his playing career for the Chicago Giants where he also managed the team. He took over the team after Frank Leland died on November 14, 1914. Chicago Union Giants
The Leland Giants, originally the Chicago Union Giants, were a Negro league baseball team that competed independently during the first decade of the 20th century. The team was formed via a merge of the Chicago Unions and the Chicago Columbia Giants in 1901, and then split in 1910 to form the Chicago Giants and what would become known as the Chicago American Giants. The team was named after its owner and manager, Frank Leland. History In a 1910 article, former shortstop Jimmy Smith described the 1905 season by saying the team "made a great record of 43 straight wins" between May 19 and July 16, 1905, when they were finally beat by the Spalding team on their home grounds in Chicago. Bruce Petway took over catching duties in 1906 and the talent improved dramatically in 1907 as Rube Foster (HOF), Pete Hill (HOF), "Big Bill" Gatewood, "Mike" Moore and four other players came from East Coast teams. William Binga
William H. Binga (February 26, 1869 – October 14, 1950) was an American third baseman, catcher and manager in the pre- Negro league baseball era. Born in Michigan, Binga played most of his career in Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Currently, it appears Binga started his baseball career at the age of 26, playing three games as a catcher for a team in Adrian, Michigan. He quickly moved on to the Page Fence Giants, which eventually brought him to Chicago when the team moved to Chicago and became the Chicago Columbia Giants in 1899. In Chicago, he played for several seasons for the Columbia Giants, Chicago Union Giants, and the Leland Giants. He would move with many fellow players to Minnesota in 1908.
