Sherman Barton
Sherman "Bucky" Barton (February 2, 1875 - July 11, 1947) was an Outfielder in the Negro leagues. Sherman's brother, Eugene Barton also played baseball, playing for the cross-town team Minneapolis Keystones while Sherman played for the St. Paul Colored Gophers, beginning in 1907. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. As an outfielder, they normally play behind the six players located in the field. By convention, each of the nine defensive positions in baseball is numbered. The outfield positions are 7 (left field), 8 (center field) and 9 (right field). These numbers are shorthand designations useful in baseball scorekeeping and are not necessarily the same as the squad numbers worn on player uniforms. Minneapolis Keystones
The Minneapolis Keystones was a small club of black baseball players formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, running from approximately 1908 to 1911. While the Negro National League was not formed until 1920, the Keystones did have many top notch players, and at least one of them, Hurley McNair would go on to play with the Kansas City Monarchs and several other teams. Many of the top players of the day who were too old by the time the league was formed, and include William Binga, George Hopkins, Bobby Marshall, and Archie Pate. Many researchers do not consider the Keystones a "formal" Negro league team. Eugene Barton
Eugene Barton (April 27, 1880 – July 3, 1922), nicknamed "Cherry", was an American Negro league outfielder between 1906 and 1910. A native of Normal, Illinois, Barton was the younger brother of fellow Negro leaguer Sherman Barton. He joined his brother on the Leland Giants in 1906, then went on to play three seasons with the Minneapolis Keystones from 1908 to 1910. Normal is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town's population was 52,736. Normal is the smaller of two principal municipalities of the Bloomington–Normal metropolitan area, and Illinois' seventh most populous community outside the Chicago metropolitan area. As of 2022, Chris Koos has been Normal's mayor since 2003. The main campus of Illinois' oldest public university, Illinois State University, a fully accredited four-year institution, is in Normal, as is Heartland Community College, a fully accredited two-year institution.
