Andrew A. Bruce
Andrew Alexander Bruce (April 15, 1866 – December 6, 1934) was an American judge who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of North Dakota from 1911 to 1918. Early life and education Andrew A. Bruce was born in Madras, India, on April 15, 1866, to parents of Scottish ancestry. At the time of his birth, his father Edward Archibald Bruce was a General in the British Army and was stationed in India. Bruce attended elementary school in England. In 1881, at the age of 15, Bruce was orphaned and immigrated to the United States on his own. For several years, Bruce worked as a farm laborer in Minnesota. He then later attended the University of Wisconsin, where he received his law degree in 1892. Career After graduating, Bruce practiced law in Wisconsin and Illinois. David Morgan (judge)
David Morgan (November 8, 1849 – May 11, 1912) was an American judge who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of North Dakota from 1901 to 1911. Early life and education Morgan was born on November 8, 1849, in Coalport, Ohio. At a young age, he moved to the state of Wisconsin with his parents. He attended common schools there, being educated at Spring Green Academy and Plattville State Normal School. He also took a year-long special course at Wisconsin State University. Career After leaving Wisconsin State University, Morgan taught school in Ironton, Wisconsin. He served later as a principal of a school in Chilton. Morgan was elected to serve as the Sauk County clerk of court. During his terms in this position, he read law with a number of judges. He was then admitted to practice law in 1879. North Dakota Supreme Court
The North Dakota Supreme Court is the highest court of law in the state of North Dakota. The Court rules on questions of law in appeals from the state's district courts. Each of the five justices are elected on a no-party ballot for ten year terms, arranged such that one seat is contested every two years. The Chief Justice is elected from the Justices every five years (or upon vacancy) by vote of the Supreme Court justices and the District Court judges. The Supreme Court is empowered to constitute a Court of Appeals consisting of a three-member panel chosen from active and retired District Court judges, retired Supreme Court justices, and lawyers. The Court of Appeals only hears cases specifically assigned to it by the Supreme Court, which is done only infrequently. John Burke (North Dakota Politician)
John Burke (February 25, 1859 – May 14, 1937) was an American lawyer, jurist, and political leader from North Dakota who served as the 10th governor of North Dakota from 1907 to 1913, and later served as the 24th treasurer of the United States under President Woodrow Wilson. Following his term as treasurer, he subsequently served intermittently as Chief Justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court first from 1929-1931, then from 1935 until his death in 1937. Early life Burke was born in Sigourney, Iowa of Irish ancestry to John and Mary (née Ryan) Burke. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1886 with a law degree. He married Mary E.
