The Clark's miner bee (''Andrena clarkella'') is a species of mining bee, miner bee in the family Andrenidae. Other common names include Clark's andrena and Clarke's mining bee. It is found in Europe and Northern Asia (excluding China) and North America. Etymology: KIRBY named the species in honor of Bracy Clark, an English entomologist. Identification: 10-13 mm. Male with brown hair with loose tergite bands. Rarely on flowers, more on tree bark basking. In the field not to distinguish from similar Andrena species. Female easy to determine in the field: very densely hairy, with black hairs on the abdomen and reddish brown hair on the mesonotum. Hind legs fox red with equally colored rail brush. William Kirby (19 September 1759 – 4 July 1850) was an English entomologist, an original member of the Linnean Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society, as well as a country rector, so that he was an eminent example of the "parson-naturalist". The four-volume ''Introduction to Entomology'', co-written with William Spence, was widely influential. Family origins and early studies Kirby was a grandson of the Suffolk topographer John Kirby (author of ''The Suffolk Traveller'') and nephew of artist-topographer Joshua Kirby (a friend of Thomas Gainsborough's). He was also a cousin of the children's author Sarah Trimmer. His parents were William Kirby, a solicitor, and Lucy Meadows. The Andrenidae (commonly known as mining bees) are a large, nearly cosmopolitan family of solitary, ground-nesting bees. Most of the family's diversity is located in temperate or arid areas (warm temperate xeric). It includes some enormous genera (e.g., ''Andrena'' with over 1300 species, and '' Perdita'' with over 700). One of the subfamilies, Oxaeinae, is so different in appearance that they were typically accorded family status, but careful phylogenetic analysis reveals them to be an offshoot within the Andrenidae, very close to the Andreninae. Bracy Clark
Bracy Clark (1771 – 16 December 1860) was an English veterinary surgeon specialising in the horse. Biography He was the youngest son of John and Hannah Clark of Chipping Norton, and was educated at the Quaker school of Thomas Huntley at Burford in Oxfordshire. He was one of the first students enrolled at the newly established Veterinary College of London, and studied under Charles Benoît Vial de Sainbel. Sainbel died of unidentified fever in 1793 (later thought to be glanders); Clark disregarded the instructions to stay clear of the body, to produce a death mask. Clark made a continental tour around 1797, but wartime conditions meant he wasn't able to visit France. He was then in a London veterinary practice with William Moorcroft and Edmund Bond. Clark specialised in conditions of horses' hooves, and in 1806 patented a new pattern horse shoe; he was then in practice at Giltspur Street, London. ''Andrena bicolor'', or Gwynne's mining bee, is a common and widespread Western Palearctic mining bee which is found over most of Europe as well as North Africa and the Middle East and which reaches eastwards into Siberia. Description ''Andrena bicolor'' is a small to medium-sized mining bee, with the males being slightly smaller than the females. The females have a coat of reddish-brown hairs on the dorsal surface of the thorax, a wholly black-haired face and indistinct bands of yellowish hairs on the margins of the first to third tergites. ''Bombylius major'' (commonly named the large bee-fly, the dark-edged bee-fly or the greater bee fly) is a parasitic bee mimic fly. ''B. major'' is the most common type of fly within the ''Bombylius'' genus. The fly derives its name from its close resemblance to bumblebees and are often mistaken for them. ''B. major'' exhibits a unique flight behavior known as "yawing" and plays a role in general pollination, without preference of flower types. The fly does not bite, sting, or spread disease.
