He is best known as the guitar player in the metal bands The Haunted and At the Gates, alongside his bass-playing twin brother Jonas Björler. In July 1996, at the end of the touring cycle for their critically acclaimed 1995 album ''Slaughter of the Soul'', Björler left the band and At the Gates consequently split up. In October 2007, At the Gates announced a final reunion for 2008, playing major European music festivals and tour dates in the US, Japan an ...

Melodic Death Metal
Melodic death metal (also referred to as melodeath) is a subgenre of death metal that employs highly melodic guitar riffs, often borrowing from traditional heavy metal (including New Wave of British Heavy Metal). The genre features the heaviness of death metal but with highly melodic or harmonized guitar riffs and solos, and often features high-pitched shrieked vocals (differing from traditional death metal) alongside the low-pitched growls commonly featured in traditional death metal. Pioneered by the English heavy metal band Carcass with their 1993 album ''Heartwork'', melodic death metal developed further in Sweden (developed by bands like At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, and In Flames) in the mid-1990s. The Swedish death metal scene did much to popularise the style, soon centering in the "Gothenburg metal" scene. At the Gates' ''Slaughter of the Soul'', Dark Tranquility's '' The Gallery'', and In Flames' ''The Jester Race'', all released in the mid-1990s, were highly influen ...

Terminal Spirit Disease
''Terminal Spirit Disease'' is the third album by Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates. It was released in 1994 (see 1994 in music) and re-released in 2003 with bonus tracks. It is the first album to feature rhythm guitarist Martin Larsson who replaced Alf Svensson in 1993. The band originally had wanted to record an EP of new material, but their label had insisted on a full-length album. To compromise, the band added several live tracks to pad the overall length. Background information Guitarist Anders Björler commented that he couldn't "remember much" from the recording sessions for ''Terminal Spirit Disease''. When compared to at the Gates' older material, Björler felt the tracks "were simpler and more to the point". A violin and cello are featured on the song "And the World Returned", cited as an example of the group's attempt to explore "ideas which were a little different". Reception Reviews for ''Terminal Spirit Disease'' have been mostly positive. AllMusic's Ed ...

With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness
''With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness'' is the second studio album by the Swedish death metal band At the Gates. It was re-released in 1993 with '' The Red in the Sky Is Ours'' and again in 2003 with bonus tracks. This would be the last album with guitarist Alf Svensson who left the band after its release. Background information Anders Björler, the guitarist, described ''With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness'' as At the Gates' "darkest album", and deemed the album's production as "heavier" than the group's previous work. Tomas Lindberg, the vocalist, said of the album cover: "The cover ..is probably my favorite. It is a piece of art made by Swedish author/artist/composer Åke Hodell. The piece is called 220 Volt Buddha. Åke approved for us to use it for free, after inquiring about the music of the band and our approach, as soon as he understood that we were a non-commercial act. He has composed several pieces of abstract music, written radio plays and novels. You could co ...

The Red In The Sky Is Ours
''The Red in the Sky Is Ours'' is the debut album by the Swedish death metal band At the Gates released on 27 July 1992. It was re-released in 1993 along with ''With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness'' and then in 2003 with bonus tracks. Background information When At the Gates began recording ''The Red in the Sky Is Ours'', the group had been together for a mere year. In comparison to 1991 EP ''Gardens of Grief'', guitarist Anders Björler feels that ''The Red in the Sky Is Ours'' is more structured. In certain instances, Björler deems the record "experimental" nonetheless. At this time, the group's members started to learn about one another musically. Björler was at the time very inspired by guitarist Alf Svensson's ideas, and called them "over the top" and "extremely challenging". However, Björler went on to comment that the group "tried too hard to impress people with too many riffs and weird songwriting". Björler has criticised the production also, dubbing it "weird" and ...

Post-rock
Post-rock is a form of experimental rock characterized by a focus on exploring textures and timbre over traditional rock song structures, chords, or riffs. Post-rock artists are often instrumental, typically combining rock instrumentation with electronics. The genre emerged within the indie and underground music scene of the 1980s and early 1990s. However, due to its abandonment of rock conventions, it often bears little resemblance musically to contemporary indie rock, borrowing instead from diverse sources including ambient, electronica, jazz, krautrock, dub, and minimalist classical. Artists such as Talk Talk and Slint have been credited with producing foundational works in the style in the early 1990s. The term post-rock itself was notably employed by journalist Simon Reynolds in a review of the 1994 Bark Psychosis album '' Hex''. It later solidified into a recognizable trend with the release of Tortoise's 1996 album ''Millions Now Living Will Never Die''. The term has ...

Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. But jazz did not begin as a single musical tradition in New Orleans or elsewhere. In the 1930s, arranged dance-oriented swing big bands, Kansas City jazz (a hard-swinging, bluesy, improvisationa ...

Slaughter Of The Soul
''Slaughter of the Soul'' is the fourth studio album by Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates, released on November 14, 1995. It was their last album before their eleven-year breakup from 1996 to 2007. ''Slaughter of the Soul'' is considered a landmark in melodic death metal and played a major role in popularizing the Gothenburg scene, alongside ''The Jester Race'' by In Flames and '' The Gallery'' by Dark Tranquillity. The album was recorded and mixed in Studio Fredman, early 1995. Andy LaRocque's neo-classical guest solo on "Cold" was widely acclaimed as one of the greatest metal solos and guitarist Anders Björler admitted in 2007 that he still could not play it properly. "Blinded by Fear" was covered by The Haunted (composed largely of ex-At the Gates members) on their Japanese version of their live/double disc album, '' Live Rounds in Tokyo'' and was also covered by Fleshgod Apocalypse on their ''Mafia'' EP. The song also appeared in the game '' Rock Band 2'' as d ...
