Andenne Abbey
Andenne (; wa, Andene) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in the province of Namur, Belgium. On January 1, 2006, Andenne had a total population of 25,240. The total area is 86.17 km² which gives a population density of 292 inhabitants per km². The municipality, and the central city, extend on both sides of the river Meuse. The municipality consists of the following districts: Andenne, Bonneville, Coutisse, Landenne, Maizeret, Namêche, Sclayn, Seilles, Thon-Samson, and Vezin. History The city is symbolized by a bear, originating from the legend that saw Charles Martel, while still a child, use a hammer to kill a bear that terrorized the inhabitants. "Fats" Sadi Pol Lallemand (23 October 1927, Andenne, Belgium – 20 February 2009, Huy) was a Belgian jazz musician, vocalist, and composer who played vibraphone and percussion. He chose the name "Sadi" because he disliked his last name, which means "the German" in French. He led a quartet and nonet and won the Belgian Golden Django for best French-speaking artist in 1996. Career His first instrument was xylophone, which he played in a circus in the 1930s. After World War II, he turned professional playing the vibraphonist. He performed with Bobby Jaspar in the Bob Shots, then with Don Byas. From 1950 to 1961, he lived in Paris, where he played with Aimé Barelli, Django Reinhardt, and Martial Solal. Carl Johan Frederik Jakhelln
Carl Johan Frederik Jakhelln (27 August 1914 – 25 April 1987) was a Norwegian diplomat and writer. He was born in Andenne, Belgium, as the son of jurist and diplomatist Johan Fredrik Winter Jakhelln. The family lived in five countries when Jakhelln was young, and he took his first higher education at Sorø Academy before moving to Norway. While a student at the University of Oslo, he was arrested for "spying" in 1941 during the German occupation of Norway. He was imprisoned at Møllergata 19 from 31 March to 28 June, and then in Grini concentration camp until November. He was then incarcerated in Sachsenhausen concentration camp until the war's end in May 1945. Here he led a social life with prisoners of several nationalities. He was known for making crossword puzzles, quizzes and other pastimes for fellow prisoners. Pepin II (c. 635 – 16 December 714), commonly known as Pepin of Herstal, was a Frankish statesman and military leader who de facto ruled Francia as the Mayor of the Palace from 680 until his death. He took the title Duke and Prince of the Franks upon his conquest of all the Frankish realms. Pepin I (also Peppin, Pipin, or Pippin) of Landen (c. 580 – 27 February 640), also called the Elder or the Old, was the Mayor of the palace of Austrasia under the Merovingian King Dagobert I from 623 to 629. Begga
Saint Begga (also Begue, Begge) (b. 613 – d. 17 December 693 AD) was the daughter of Pepin of Landen, mayor of the palace of Austrasia, and his wife Itta of Metz. She is also the grandmother of Charles Martel, who is the grandfather of Charlemagne. Life The daughter of Pepin of Landen and his wife, Itta, Begga was the older sister of St Gertrude of Nivelles. She married Ansegisel, son of Arnulf, Bishop of Metz, and had three children: Pepin of Heristal, Martin of Laon, and Clotilda of Heristal, who married Theuderic III of the Franks. Ansegisel was killed sometime before 679, slain in a feud by his enemy Gundewin. Begga made a pilgrimage to Rome and upon her return, she took the veil, she had seven churches built at Andenne on the Meuse. There she spent the rest of her days as abbess.
