''An Elefant Never Forgets'' is the second album by Australian hip hop band The Herd, released 10 February 2003. The first single released from the album, "Burn Down the Parliament", was meant to be interpreted metaphorically, but unfortunately was released the same week as the devastating Canberra bushfires in 2003. The second track released, "77%", featured the line "77% of Aussies are racist", referring to the number of Australians announced in a survey that agreed with the Australian federal government's response to the Tampa affair, and also directly attacked the perceived racism of a number of Australian radio talkback hosts, caused a small stir which gained the track more publicity. The Herd is an Australian hip hop group formed in Sydney. The group employs a "full band" format and is recognised for its live shows. The Herd is composed of Ozi Batla, Urthboy, Berzerkatron (MCs), Unkle Ho (beats), Traksewt (piano accordion, clarinet and beats), Sulo (beats and guitar), Toe-Fu (guitar), Rok Poshtya (bass) and singer Jane Tyrrell. Australian hip hop traces its origins to the early 1980s and is largely inspired by hip hop and other urban musical genres from the United States. Elefant Traks is a record label based in Sydney, Australia, that predominantly releases Australian hip hop music. The label is distributed in Australia by Inertia Distribution. History 1998–2008: Formation, The Herd, Urthboy, Horrorshow Elefant Traks was started in 1998 by Kenny Sabir ( Traksewt); Under Sabir's management, the label's first official compilation album, ''Cursive Writing'', was released, and Sabir briefly explained the process in 2011: "For the first compilation, some of the people on there I had never actually even met at the time of release. It was sliding a CD under the door type of stuff. I think that was Richie (Tamplenizza), I didn't meet him." ''The Sun Never Sets'' is the third album by Australian hip hop band The Herd and was released on 3 October 2005. The album was selected as the Triple J and 2SER 'Album of the Week' and was nominated for the inaugural Triple J - J Award for Australian Album of the year. The album debuted at #3 on the AIR independent album charts. In October 2005, The Herd performed a cover of Redgum's classic anti-war song " I Was Only 19" on Triple J's ‘Like a Version’ radio program. The song became one of the most heavily requested songs on the station. The Herd's version of " I Was Only 19" was voted in at #18 in the 2005 Triple J Hottest 100 playlist. 2003 Canberra Bushfires
The 2003 Canberra bushfires caused severe damage to the suburbs and outer areas of Canberra, the capital city of Australia, during 18–22 January 2003. Almost 70% of the Australian Capital Territory's (ACT) pastures, pine plantations, and nature parks were severely damaged, and most of the Mount Stromlo Observatory was destroyed. After burning for a week around the edges of the ACT, the fires entered the suburbs of Canberra on 18 January 2003. Tampa Affair
In late August 2001, the Howard Government of Australia refused permission for the Norwegian freighter MV ''Tampa'', carrying 433 rescued refugees (predominantly Hazaras of Afghanistan from a distressed fishing vessel in international waters) and 5 crew, to enter Australian waters. This triggered an Australian political controversy in the lead-up to the 2001 federal election, and a diplomatic dispute between Australia and Norway. The MV Tampa was a so called ro-ro ship. Ro-ro is an abbreviation of roll-on/roll off. The Triple J Hottest 100 is an annual music listener poll hosted by the publicly-funded, national Australian youth radio station, Triple J. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite Australian and alternative music of the year in an online poll conducted two weeks prior to the new year. From 1989 to 2018, the 100 most popular songs were counted down from 12 pm on Australia Day. Since then, the countdown has been held on the fourth weekend of January, due to increasing controversy about Australia Day regarding its marking of the colonisation of Australia and dispossession of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land.
