Elefant Traks is a record label based in Sydney, Australia, that predominantly releases Australian hip hop music. The label is distributed in Australia by Inertia Distribution. History 1998–2008: Formation, The Herd, Urthboy, Horrorshow Elefant Traks was started in 1998 by Kenny Sabir ( Traksewt); Under Sabir's management, the label's first official compilation album, ''Cursive Writing'', was released, and Sabir briefly explained the process in 2011: "For the first compilation, some of the people on there I had never actually even met at the time of release. It was sliding a CD under the door type of stuff. I think that was Richie (Tamplenizza), I didn't meet him." Sabir eventually enlisted the help of Tim Levinson (Urthboy) to run the administration arm of the label, as the nature of the work was not compatible with his aspirations. FBi places a heavy emphasis on local emerging music: it has a policy that at least 50 per cent of its music content is to be Australian, of which at least half comes from Sydney musicians. History FBi began 'test broadcasting' as an 'aspirant broadcaster' in 1995 following the then- Keating government's decision to allocate the last three FM licences in Sydney. The election of John Howard delayed the process as the coalition government focussed on radio licences for country towns. After making a series of short-term broadcasts over eight years, FBi Radio beat 16 other aspirant broadcasters to be granted a permanent licence by the Australian Broadcasting Authority in 2002. ''Spitshine'' is the third studio album by Australian hip hop artist and member of The Herd, Urthboy. It was released on 28 August 2009. Overview The album was shortlisted for the 2009 Australian Music Prize, the second time Urthboy has been nominated, with ''The Signal'' being nominated in 2007. The first song lifted from the album was "Hellsong", was released as a free download from Urthboy's official website, in May 2009. The video for the song is composed of more than 7,000 hand-drawn images and animated in Sydney, Christchurch, London, Hungary and Oslo. It was directed by Brendan Doyle and produced by Navid Bahadori, for Broken Yellow. ''The Signal'' is the second album from The Herd member Urthboy and was released on 14 July 2007. The album features production from Australian artists El Gusto of Hermitude fame and Count Bounce from TZU. It also features collaborations from several prominent Australian MCs and Musicians. Fat Freddys Drop
Fat Freddy's Drop is a New Zealand seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno. Originally a jam band formed in the late 1990s by musicians from other bands in Wellington, Fat Freddy's Drop gradually became its members' sole focus. Band members continued playing with their other respective groups—The Black Seeds, TrinityRoots, Bongmaster, and others—for much of their 20-year career. The Cat Empire
The Cat Empire are an Australian jazz/funk band, formed in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1999. For most of the band's duration, the core members were Felix Riebl (lead vocals, percussion), Harry James Angus (trumpet, vocals), Will Hull-Brown (drums), Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwhala (turntables, percussion), Ollie McGill (keyboards, backing vocals) and Ryan Monro (bass, backing vocals).
