The Amity Hills are a range of hills northeast of Amity, in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. A northern spur or extension of the Eola Hills, they are separated from them by a pass between Amity and Hopewell. They stretch about four miles from Amity towards Dayton Prairie. The Eola-Amity Hills AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Polk County and Yamhill County, Oregon. It is entirely contained within the Willamette Valley AVA, and stretches from the city of Amity in the north to Salem in the south. The Eola and Amity hills cover an area west of the Willamette River approximately long by wide. The Eola-Amity Hills area benefits from steady winds off the Pacific Ocean that reach the Willamette Valley through the Van Duzer Corridor, a gap in the Oregon Coast Range, moderating the summer temperatures. Amity is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 1,614. History The town was established between 1848 and 1849 by Joseph and Ahio S. Part of Joseph's land claim became the community's townsite. The name "Amity" came from the name of a school that was built by two rival communities after the amicable settlement of a dispute. Hopewell, Oregon
Hopewell is an unincorporated community in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. It is at the eastern terminus of Oregon Route 153, south of Dayton and a few miles west of Wheatland, at the east base of the Eola Hills. Hopewell post office was established in 1897, and closed out to Amity in 1903. Hopewell is now served by the Salem post office. The name Hopewell does not appear in the gazetteers of the 1880s. Hopewell was the home of George K. Gay, who voted in the May 1843 Champoeg Meeting that created the provisional government, and built the first brick residence in the state of Oregon near Hopewell in 1842. Gay's great-grandson, singer Johnnie Ray John Alvin Ray (January 10, 1927 – February 24, 1990) was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. Dayton, Oregon
Dayton is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,534 at the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census. History The city was founded in 1850 by Andrew Smith and Joel Palmer. Palmer, who also served as Oregon Superintendent of Indian Affairs, superintendent of Indian affairs for Oregon, built a flour mill there. Dayton was named for Smith's hometown, Dayton, Ohio. Dayton post office was opened in 1851, with Christopher Taylor serving as postmaster. There are many historic landmarks throughout the city. The oldest standing structure is the Palmer House (Dayton, Oregon), Joel Palmer House, built in 1852 or 1857. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since March 16, 1987, and has been painstakingly restored.
